The legend of the Petrovaradin Fortress tunnel has been recounted among the people of Novi Sad for decades, but no one knows if these stories are true. …

The architect Vojislav Dević began investigating a few years ago to find a tunnel under the Petrovaradin Fortress, which, according to his claims, connected both sides of the Danube. The desire for such an effort appeared at an early age, when his cousin Bogojevac Drenka told him that the last time a married couple went there was in 1913, writes the RTV portal.

“We determined one, two and a half years ago that under the bottom of the Danube between 8 and 9 meters, there is a rectilinear construction where Bogojevac Drenka spoke, and that is the legend that everyone talks about and nobody has ever lifted a finger to prove it or to refute it, “says Vojislav Devic.

Devic believes that at the end of the First World War, the last Austro-Hungarian general received an order to block all the entrances and exits of the tunnel, before the Serbian army entered the building. One of the entrances was located a few meters from the Monument to the Victims of the Raid and the other in the crypt below the Church of San Jorge.

“The archive says nothing because we only know that there were only two plans that spoke of that tunnel. One is in the Vienna archives and cannot be reached. There were several plans, parts of the fortress that were divided by several commanders who were defending their sector, and the commander in chief of the defense of the fortress was the one who had that other map that was all inscribed, and that other map disappeared with the sinking of the Titanic, he went to an exhibition in New York “. Devic confirmed for RTV.

Based on sonar research of the Danube, a 3D model of the tunnel is currently being developed, which could be a key proof of its existence, and after its reconstruction, a major tourist attraction would be created.
