On the show with Graham Bensinger, Novak recalled a moment that marked his life and that he cannot erase from his memory for long.
– It was the first or second night of the bombing. Just the second time we fell asleep that night, there was a powerful explosion, my mother got up quickly and hit her head on the radiator and was knocked unconscious. We cried for Bobby and because she did not react. My dad was there wondering what was going on. He managed to help his mother and get her back, we quickly gathered up our things and left the house on the street where there was no light. It was very loud, we couldn’t hear each other even if we were close and even if you were screaming, nobody would listen to you. My father carried brothers, my mother carried things, and at one point I slipped and saw with my own eyes an airplane flying and dropping bombs while the ground, of course, was shaking. These are the most traumatic images from my childhood to today. I think my family was lucky because we didn’t lose someone close, and there were many families who did, and that’s a special level of suffering and trauma. I can’t even imagine the pain they suffered – said Novak Djokovic.
He also accompanied the team to a shelter under his grandfather Vlada’s apartment.
– We spend almost every night here. It’s crazy when you think about the number of people who had to come to the shelter and hide from the danger that came from the air. And yes, it looks the same as it did 20 years ago. I am trying to remember how many people there were, but there was an entire building that had more than 50 apartments, with families with children, there was not much space – Djokovic said and added:
– I don’t remember all the things here, I was very young. We feel insecure, unaware of what the next moment would bring to me, my family … I remember there was a lot of fear, tears and suffering here in the first days, and after five or six days people started singing, playing cards and started must accept reality, they will have to come here every night and pray that everything is fine.
