The Police General and former head of the Traffic Police Directorate of the Ministry of the Interior of Serbia, Dragisa Simic, was sentenced yesterday before the Third Court of First Instance to one year in prison, suspended for three years, after being found guilty of abusing of his official position. The sentence will not be carried out unless General Simic commits a new crime in the next three years.

The indictment of the Belgrade Third Basic Prosecutor’s Office was filed in 2016, and Simić was charged that from 2011 to 2014, taking advantage of his official position, he ordered the employees of the administration he headed not to press charges against certain persons who committed a minor offense , that is, not submitting requests to initiate a misdemeanor process against them.

When initiating the investigation against Simic, the investigating bodies considered the possibility of transferring the trial against him to the jurisdiction of the Superior Prosecutor’s Office, but this was not possible because it was not possible to determine how much damage was caused, given that some of the the fault processes were not started. and in some it has become obsolete.

According to information previously published by the media, while he was the head of the Directorate of the Traffic Police of the Serbian Interior Ministry, Simić “dropped” the misdemeanor charges written against certain celebrities, politicians and athletes, ie , did not refer the charges already written to the competent court.

Dragisa Simic has worked in the Ministry of the Interior since 1990. A year later, he was assigned to the post of traffic police in the SUP of Pristina. In the same secretariat, he became the head of the sector in 1998. He was appointed head of the Directorate of Traffic Police of the Ministry of the Interior of Serbia in January 2010 and replaced four years later, in June 2014.

At the beginning of 2012, the then Police Minister Ivica Dačić promoted him to the rank of general, following his participation in the action to arrest criminals who stole a painting by Paul Cézanne, estimated at around one hundred million euros. He reportedly joined the chase after a call from Rodoljub Milovic, the then UKP chief. After the process began, he was assigned to a lower position in the Ministry of the Interior.
