On October 31, the Serbian Orthodox Church celebrates two festivals, Saint Luke and Peter of Cetinje.
Saint Luke is one of the first preachers of Christianity, a contemporary of Jesus Christ and the author of one of the four gospels.
Saint Luke is one of the first preachers of Christianity, a contemporary of Jesus Christ and the author of one of the four gospels.
The church considers him the founder of Christian iconography, as he painted three icons of the Blessed Mother of God and the icons of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul.
It is believed that Saint Luke personally knew the Mother of God and that the three icons with her image that the saint painted are the closest to her true appearance. For this reason, he is considered the founder of Christian iconography. His relics are kept in Constantinople.
The holiday is popularly known as Lucindan and is a frequent celebration of Serbian Orthodox families. Saint Luke is the protector of the medical profession and of many hospitals.
However, the church commemorates another saint, albeit much more recent. Saint Peter of Cetinje lived in Montenegro in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
In 1784, he became Metropolitan and Lord of Montenegro. The Church remembers, and people especially celebrate, its victory over Napoleon’s army in Boka and Dalmatia. He dedicated his life to fighting the enemy and reconciling disputes in Montenegro.
His miraculous relics rest in the Cetinje Monastery. Although they were representatives of two different eras, both Lucas and Pedro indebted orthodoxy with their deeds. That is why it is a red letter and you should not work hard.
Customs and beliefs
Our people believe that these days we should take care of the pens, so that the wolves do not strangle the cattle. There is a famous saying: “Luka is coming, there is a wolf.” It is also known that winter is just around the corner after this festivity, that is why it is also said “San Lucas, snow on the hips”.
Today you should not be direct and nervous because San Lucas was meek, peaceful and always ready to help people.
On this day, it is customary to release rams jump on the sheep, and the shepherds are given a feast and brought better sandwiches or cakes, which in Herzegovina are called pazarice. When the sheep “squeezes” and does not charge, they say it will be a harsh winter. If the sheep receive rams more easily, it is believed that spring will come earlier.
In southern Serbia, the first guest to enter the house in Lucindan wonders what the winter or the year will be like. In Montenegro, they say that the rainbow in the sky is the belt of San Lucas.
He is also respected as a protector of medicine and pharmacy, hospitals and pharmacies, doctors, pharmacists, and patients.
