The Serbian Orthodox Church and its believers celebrate St. Luke tomorrow, and many Serbian hosts are celebrating his baptism. Many beautiful and interesting popular beliefs are connected with Saint Luke and his holidays …
Saint Luke, as the protector of physicians and physicians, is celebrated today by the medical profession, and Orthodox believers believe that his relics have miraculous power to cure even the most serious diseases. Saint Luke himself treated for free.
Our ancestors used to believe that in Lucindan they would tell us what kind of winter awaits us …
Even today, people say, “Saint Luke – hip-deep snow.” There is also a famous saying: “Luka is coming, there is a wolf.”
It was customary among Serbian hosts to let rams chase sheep on this day. If the sheep were stretched out, our ancestors would believe or not that winter would be long and hard. If they did not reject the rams, it was believed that the winter would not be long and that the spring would arrive earlier.
On this day, the hosts honored their shepherds with whom they brought cakes – bazaars.
It was also believed that if the host woke up early in the morning for Lucinda and saw the cattle lying down, so would the winter. If he bent his legs, it was believed that the winter would be harsh and the year bad. And if he stretched his legs, they thought a mild winter or a good year awaited them and an even better harvest.
It has been a custom in Serbia for a long time that sheep pens are girded with red thread on this day so that the wolves do not enter them and kill the cattle.
In southern Serbia, the first guest to enter the house in Lucindan wonders what the winter or the year will be like.
In Montenegro, people believe that the foot of Saint Luke, which is kept in a monastery there, heals sight. In Montenegro, the celestial rainbow is also believed to be the Belt of Saint Luke.
On this day, you should not feel overwhelmed and nervous because San Lucas was kind and calm and always helped people.
A contemporary of Jesus Christ
Saint Luke is originally from Antioch, an ancient area that was in the area of present-day Turkey, and according to tradition, he was a very cultured man. He studied Greek philosophy, medicine, frescoes …
After meeting Christ, he was soon included among the 70 apostles and sent to preach, and on the way to Emmaus he saw the risen Lord.
After the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles, Luke returned to Antioch. He worked with the Apostle Paul, with whom he traveled to Rome, converting pagans to Christianity. After the death of the Apostle Paul, he continued to preach Christianity in Italy, Dalmatia, and Macedonia.
Saint Luke was 84 years old when the pagans tortured him and then hung him from an olive tree in the city of Thebes.
He is one of the gospel writers who wrote at the request of many Christians and the intellectual elite of the time. The Gospel of Luke is the third Gospel of the New Testament. It is believed to have been written around the year 60. At that time, Saint Luke was in his 60s. It is believed that Saint Luke personally knew the Mother of God and that the three icons with her face painted by the saint are the closest to her true appearance, and the “icon in the icon” is known to represent Saint Luke and the icon of the Mother of God painted by the saint.
The icons of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul are also paintings of the saint, and the church considers him the founder of Christian iconography.
We also celebrate San Pedro de Cetinje
At the same time, the Serbian Orthodox Church is marking another saint.
Saint Peter of Cetinje lived in Montenegro in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
In 1784, he became Metropolitan and Lord of Montenegro. The Church remembers, and people especially celebrate, its victory over Napoleon’s army in Boka and Dalmatia. He dedicated his life to fighting the enemy and reconciling disputes in Montenegro.
His miraculous relics rest in the Cetinje Monastery.
