Screams, flames, black smoke rising to the sky, and heroes who literally set their lives on fire for someone else’s sake – they are a picture of yesterday’s action rescuing a teenager (15) in whose apartment in Dorcol a fire started that it engulfed the entire apartment.
The fire element was allegedly caused by a celebratory candle that was lit yesterday in the apartment on the 10th floor of the building at Ulica visokog Stevana in Dorcol, at the time the teenager was taking a shower. She was alone in the apartment, she did not even imagine that a few moments later her life would literally hang by a thread.
Sensing the smoke coming from other rooms, she ran out of the bathroom and headed for the terrace, asking for help all the time. The fire had already devoured most of the apartment, so the girl, in a panic, remained on the terrace, waiting for someone to hear her moans.
And yes, they were overheard by workers at a nearby construction site who immediately organized and began a rescue operation. As we were told, they tried to break down the door but without success, so they went to the apartment under the fire.
– They tied me up on the terrace below and held me, and the girl crossed to the other side of the terrace and then jumped to my place. The whole thing took about 15 minutes, Pavle Gavura, a painter from Pancevo, later recounted.
The haunting scene of rescuing the girl was watched frantically by the neighbors of the surrounding apartments, unable to help in any way. Thanks to the bravery of these boys, to the sobriety of the girl who crossed to the other side of the handrail and jumped into Paul’s arms, the fire passed without casualties and the girl was saved.
