The first control tasks and tests in schools began in October and teachers notice that some students have stopped learning.
The general impression is that the new school year is a great challenge for everyone, as well as that the interaction between students and teachers in the classroom cannot be replaced by anything. As it turned out, the most common difficulties students have within independent work.
Sanja Strbac, a teacher of Serbian language and literature at Zemun Secondary School, notes that students find it difficult to maintain regularity in their studies, especially in the week they attend classes from home.
– This impression has been present since the beginning of the school year, and has intensified with the first tests of current knowledge in students. My grades are lower, other colleagues have shared experiences, but it cannot be said that their grades are better. I generally give grades through oral exams and conversation, those grades are better than the written assignment, but I am not satisfied. I think they can and should be better – says Sanja Strbac for “Blic”.
A little time in class
The teacher states that an hour of half an hour is not enough to approach teaching in a more creative and meaningful way, as well as to give the student enough time to concentrate on the subject. To learn, you still need to ask questions, talk …
– In changing circumstances, the principle of rationalizing the course of the class often passes through the omission of an important part of the teaching process: the motivation to work in class. It all comes down to information that is not the only thing a student needs to learn and train in class, on the contrary. On topics like my content, it is necessary to discuss it and think about it in an animated dialogue, says the teacher.
High school champions are tougher
Difficulties in maintaining regularity of learning in the weeks of online classes were also noted among students at the Second School of Economics in Belgrade, say deputy director Cveta Mitrović and president of the Professional Council of Economists Jasmina Božić.
– Teachers in that week use various WEB tools and recorded lessons published on RTS Planet, which cannot yet be compared to the effect of direct teaching in school. Students lack school, friends, socialization in general, with very frequent comments that the living word of a teacher is irreplaceable – point out the interlocutors of “Blic”.
Our interlocutors add that there are no major discrepancies in student grades, except in the first grade, which is currently rated somewhat worse.
– The reason is that these are new, professional subjects and two out of every four weeks in the month of direct teaching are not enough to adopt the didactic content in a quality way. Also, as one of the reasons for the poorer grades of first graders, we also mentioned the completion of primary education online, say Mitrović and Božić.
Learning irregularities
Marina Stojanović, a mathematics teacher and deputy head of the Belgrade primary school “Kralj Petar I”, is of the opinion that older students in the new circumstances cannot fully achieve regular learning.
– There are subjects where the living word of the teacher is very important for the adoption of new didactic content. So there is a need for additional support from teachers, and this is quite difficult due to the constraints that we have to respect for justified reasons. We try to give as many explanations of the teaching content as possible in the classes when the students are in school, even when it is not according to the plan for that class, and to use the online classes more for practice – says Stojanović.
He adds that the results of the control exercise are normal, but points out that the weight of the proof that he gave to the students differs from the usual, because it adjusts to the situation.
Television classes are missing
Mirjana Milanović, a teacher at the Belgrade primary school “Despot Stefan Lazarević”, points out that the students are happy to have returned to school, but the impression is that some students are watching television classes irregularly.
– According to our research, during distance learning during the last school year, the highest percentage of our students lacked school and the living word of the teacher. A big challenge for them is the length of the hours. They point out that in 30 minutes they cannot send new material and respond to the requests they have in front of them – says the pedagogue.
He says that despite the maximum commitment of everyone in certain cases, the best expected results are lacking.
It depends on the student
Tanja Kraljević Markoš, an English teacher at “Karađorđe” primary school in Voždovac, believes that students have only gotten used to learning since October, but that it is highly dependent on students.
– Those who work regularly and diligently do so now, and those who are prone to campaign learning continue to do so. I believe that, however, regular learning can be maintained, with a good organization of the students, but also of the teachers – he says.
Patience and cooperation with parents.
As a precondition for children to better attend classes and learn, teachers emphasize that there must be cooperation with parents.
– Students spend a lot of time outside of school and it is necessary to give them more time, patience, understanding to adapt to current circumstances. One of the important preconditions is mutual cooperation with parents, as more responsible partners in learning, concludes Milanović.
