WHAT IF IT IS NOT A BOILER? This is a possible cause of the explosion in Čukarica

As we learned unofficially, the third-floor apartment, in which three explosions were heard before the fire spread, was connected to gas, which many tenants claim is the main reason for the accident.

Although 11 people were injured by fire and smoke, they were released the same day after aid was provided due to suffocation from smoke. Due to the rapid outbreak of the fire, apartments on the fourth and fifth floors of the building were also damaged. Yesterday, “Novosti” reporters found the tenants packing things and temporarily moving to alternative locations, as it is currently impossible to stay in the building.

– The detonation was so strong that it bothered us all terribly – says the tenant Ilija Glavinić to our newspaper. – I immediately ran outside and only heard the firefighters yelling to get the children to the terrace as soon as possible. We did that because it was impossible to get out the front door. Most of the smoke was in my apartment, and the firefighter who made his way up to us after half an hour of fighting could barely breathe. My son was scared, a terrible scene, my eyes narrowed so much that I barely took him outside. We have to move temporarily until the apartment is fixed. Currently it is impossible to stay here.

As we were told, the firefighters broke the windows in the corridors to let the smoke out, and in the end they had to break the roof as well. The causes of the fire are still being investigated, and although it was initially believed that the boiler in the bathroom exploded and caused an accident, it later turned out that he was the sole survivor of the “impact.”

– Only a few apartments in the building are connected to gas, of which the third floor is completely burned – says one of the neighbors. – It is assumed that spilling gas in the bathroom, gas cylinder or instantaneous gas boiler in the kitchen caused the fire. A loud detonation was heard, followed by two lesser ones.

The building at 10 Leposave Vujosevic Street, but also most of the buildings in this part of the city, locals say, were illegally expanded more than 10 years ago. The multi-story building in which the fire broke out was built in 2002, and had a ground floor and two floors, with three more added with a later update. The third, fourth and fifth floor apartments have never been legalized and, as far as we know, all three apartments do not even have legal electricity meters.
