400,000 Serbs have already returned because they are out of work

Hundreds of millions of euros, if not a billion, could be less than the diaspora in Serbia this year. More and more of our citizens who returned in the last few months because they lost their jobs abroad, automatically reached the amount of remittances that gastrobayers sent us with a “fist and a drop”.

According to official figures, around 400,000 of our citizens have returned to their homes because, since February, due to the crisis, they have lost their jobs mainly in Germany and Austria, but also in Switzerland, France, the United States … And all of them they have sent significant amounts and remittances, up to three billion euros a year, which is as much as eight percent of Serbia’s total GDP.

Traditionally, most of the money comes from Germany, which is why just over a billion euros came in last year, which is a third of the total remittances that came to our country in 2019. This is double that of Switzerland, which at around 500 million euros was ranked second on the list of countries from which guest workers send remittances to Serbia.

According to the NBS, Austria is in the top three countries, of which around 290 million euros came in last year, but where most of our citizens returned in the past few months.

These are all the countries that have been hit hard by the current crisis and where Serbs most often carry out jobs, such as catering, trade, construction …

Inflow of remittances

“In terms of countries, the majority of remittances generally come from countries where a large part of our diaspora lives and works, mainly from Germany, Switzerland, Austria and France. The proportion of remittance inflows in the gross domestic product of Serbia it is relatively stable and is moving at the level of around 8 percent, “Blic Biznis told the National Bank of Serbia. However, as they add, the expectations for this year in terms of inflows should be different.

“Given current developments with regard to the coronary pandemic of the virus, it is realistic to assume that this year the inflow of remittances will be less than the previous year, but it is difficult at this time to estimate how much this reduction will amount,” said the central bank.

The data on the rights for the last two months of this year, which are the latest available, already show a slight decrease. In January and February, remittances totaled EUR 450.9 million, which is EUR 45 million less than in the same period last year.

Ranka Savic, president of the Association of Free and Independent Trade Unions of Serbia (ASNS), points out that more and more people from abroad are returning to Serbia, and that is not a good sign.

“Serbia very soon, as much as in a few months, will face great social pressure and a crisis that will not be as weak as we can hear these days. Our country is not a desert island and there are many negative impacts,” says Savic.

He estimates that people who have been fired will put great pressure on social funds because they could enter a situation where they did not have the means to live.

“The pressure will surely be exerted to a great extent by all the citizens who returned to Serbia during the crisis. According to official figures, they are more than 400,000 and will not return to the countries where they come from. They will also put pressure on the labor market and on funds social and I think that in this period the position of workers and the position of employees will be worse than it was before the outbreak of this pandemic and crisis, “Savic told Blic.

In America alone 650,000 Serbs

According to the latest data, there are around 11 million Serbs on the planet, with most of them in the United States, up to 650,000.

When it comes to Europe, the majority of Serbs are in Germany: 450,000, then Austria (300,000) and Switzerland (almost 200,000). It is interesting that 80,000 Serbs live in the United Kingdom, which is known for its strict procedures even for tourist visas. Finally, both Asia and Oceania have a considerable number of Serbs: 120,000, most of whom are in Australia.
