The citizens of Bor gathered in large numbers to protest the excessive pollution in this city. Dissatisfied citizens claim that problems with pollution have intensified since the Chinese company Zidjin became the majority owner of RTB Bor in late 2018, and that there is often sulfur dioxide pollution in excess of 350 micrograms per legally prescribed cubic meter.
According to the H1 reporter, this is the most massive protest that started at the entrance to the city, and then the column headed towards Zidjin. By a rough estimate, more than 2,000 people gathered.
Those gathered said they would not be absent from their demands – the fight for clean air, emphasizing that it was a “cry for life.”
Among those gathered were a large number of children of preschool and school age who chanted “We will not smoke”, while older protesters shouted “We are boranos, we are the strongest.” They carried banners that included “Stop Crime Against Bor’s Children.”
One of the participants in the protest showed the laboratory findings of a Bor patient, which showed high lead content in the blood.
Let us remind you, last week you were mayor of Bor filed a criminal complaint against Zidjin, and two days ago it was a Chinese company discontinued foundry due to overhaul.
Ilija Đuričić, activist of the “Youth Against Air Pollution” initiative, pointed out that it should have happened much earlier.
“One of the reasons why there is so much air pollution is precisely that the institutions are not doing their job,” Đuričić told H1.
He added that public pressure must continue until guarantees are obtained that the smelter, when it works again, will function without polluting the air.
“We do not have an elementary basis to breathe clean air, we are at that level,” Đuričić said, adding that the protest will be radicalized if there is no adequate response.
