Subotica – Mayor Stevan Bakić issued a statement on the occasion, saying: “damage to the commemorative bust of the Hungarian poet Deže Kostolanji”, in which he stated that Lady Schilling, director of the Inter-municipal Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments, and Vesna Hajnal, secretary of the Secretariat for inspection-supervision affairs of the City Administration, a reprimand was issued.

According to Bakic, they received a warning because they did not inform the mayor, Zagorka Panic, the city administrator, as well as the Police Administration and the Municipal Public Ministry that the poet’s bust was removed from the pedestal on September 12. Everyone learned about the event from the announcement made by the presidency of the municipal board of the Union of Vojvodina Hungarians.

Mayor Bakić’s statement indicates the sequence of events after which Leda Schilling, director of the Inter-municipal Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments, informed Vesna Hajnal, head of the Secretariat for Inspection and Supervision Affairs, who ordered the communal militia to go to the place. After that, Leda Schilling asked the teacher to remove the bust from the pedestal to repair the damage.

Bakic called on all local self-government bodies to behave responsibly and political factors not to take hasty action. By the way, the director of the Intermunicipal Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments is appointed by the Vojvodina Assembly, because it is a provincial institution and not a city one. After it was noticed on September 12 that someone tried to move the monument to Deje Kostolani, the presidency of the SVM municipal board announced that same day, evaluating that it was not an act motivated by national intolerance, but an attempt failed robbery. It is claimed that the monument was undamaged and was safely removed until a way was found to put it back on the pedestal.

The bust of the great Hungarian poet born in Subotica, Dezea Kostolania, was located in the center of the city, in the park adjoining the institute he attended.
