How the fire eye works

For more than a week, the “Fire Eye” laboratory has been operating in Belgrade. Laboratory coordinator Dr. Jelena Begovic tells RTS that the samples come mainly from Belgrade and Vojvodina, but that the list of health centers bringing samples is slowly expanding.

When it comes to capabilities, he said they received more than 2,500 samples for coronavirus testing in 24 hours, as well as a lot of work today.

“Every two days we have to take a break of 5 to 6 hours, because we have special protocols for disinfecting the interior space and then it cannot stay, the air conditioning turns off and we have to wait those 6 hours,” explains Begovic.

He indicated that the laboratory was mixed in terms of safety: one part improved level 2 and the other part safety level 3.

“People in two labs dress like it’s biosafety level 3. That means they are in suits, with glasses, visors, double gloves. No part of the skin should be exposed to the air and it’s a little exhausting, but I can seeing that people without because they come out red are very happy, “adds Begovic.

She said it was a great relief to have a part of the robotic process because it allowed them to have a lot of sample flow. “If you don’t have a robot, the process is slower and more difficult for working people,” says Begovic.

She emphasized that when the coronavirus passes, this laboratory will be meaningful to the health system, but it should also serve the scientific community.
