Donations from the Russian Federation, including 30 modernized BRDM-2MS armored reconnaissance vehicles, whose delivery to Serbia began last year, have contributed significantly to equipping our army. The vehicles obtained are highly reliable and greatly increase the operational maneuvering capabilities and firepower of the reconnaissance units of the Serbian army.
BRDM-2MS armored reconnaissance vehicles are intended for reconnaissance in all combat operations on land and water. These vehicles can be used for combat insurance, combat with enemy insurance units, transporting messengers and liaison officers, as a means of telecommunications, as a command car, to attack enemy landing forces.
Compared to the BRDM-2, the BRDM-2MS armored reconnaissance vehicle has been significantly modernized and improved. For example, instead of a gasoline engine, the BRDM-2MS has a new diesel engine with a capacity of 150 hp, which gives twice the radius of movement. Compared to its predecessor, which did not have it, the BRD-2MS has a fire extinguisher, thermal imaging camera, laser range finder, parallel observation possibilities for the commander and the shooter, guidance of the shooter by the commander (target acquisition), GPS geo-positioning and electronic map navigation, electronic engine monitoring on the driver’s monitor, reversing with the help of cameras, observation from the vehicle and autonomy of the crew in the vehicle 24 hours a day with the help of six television cameras, as well as door entry lateral, which shortens the entry-exit time.

The introduction of the BRDM-2MS armored reconnaissance vehicle in the armament of the reconnaissance units of the Serbian army is significant mainly because of the possibility of night observation, since the vehicles are equipped with thermal imaging cameras that allow the detection of targets at a distance of 3.5 kilometers. 2 kilometers away, which facilitates night observation and reconnaissance. Compared with the old BRDM, the new BRDM-2MS is much easier to operate and operate.
It is very important for the Serbian army that BRDM-2MS armored reconnaissance vehicles provide additional protection to people and help our army units carry out their tasks more safely. Raising the ballistic protection level to the 3A level and increasing the firepower allowed the vehicles to successfully follow armored units on the battlefield, which was difficult with the previous vehicle model.
The BRDM-2MS is armored at the front with 14 mm thick armor, on the side with 7 mm thick armor and on the ground with 8 mm. The additional ballistic protection consists of 20 plates of 6 mm thickness and allows to stop the 7.62 mm and 12.7 mm bullet on all sides. The front part of the armor protects from the 14.5 mm bullet at a distance of 300 meters. A mine mat was placed on the floor of the vehicle, which improved protection against mines.
The BRDM-2MS Vehicle Fire Control System is brand new. The vehicle is armed with KPVT 14.5 mm machine guns with a rate of fire of 600 rounds / min and PKT of 7.62 mm with a rate of fire of 700 rounds / min. The device has two sighting and observation devices, and due to the turret’s rotatability, it is possible to shoot targets from motion. The fire control system allows stabilization of weapons and aiming devices during firing, automatic tracking of the axis of the weapon with the axis of the aiming device, locking of electrical switches when the weapon is in the unsafe fire open position and bring the gun to the fill position.

The BRDM-2MS crew is made up of five members: commander, driver, marksman and two scouts. The vehicle exceeds a 30 degree vertical tilt and a 25 degree bank tilt. The speed of movement on the asphalt road is 90 to 100 km / h, and on dirt roads 40 to 50 km / h.
In July 2019, 10 out of a total of 30 modernized BRDM-2MS vehicles were delivered to Serbia, which are a donation from the Russian Federation to our country. The modernization of these vehicles is also part of the donation from the Russian Federation.
