Do you know what the terms ĆALE and KEVA really mean?

The terms “dad” and “mother” can often be heard in parenting lingo. Names are part of the “street” speech, however, it is noted that they are often used when there is a high degree of closeness between people.

Even the famous Momo Kapor dedicated an entire essay explaining the psychology of the “daddy” of a real Serbian host, who is also the best partner and authority when they are afraid.

On the other hand, moms often got angry when, during their pets’ puberty period, they became mothers.

For a long time this name was thought to have a derogatory and offensive meaning, however the truth is completely different.

This slang expression, which has become familiar in the Serbian language, represents an inverted interpretation of the word “some”, which in the language of the Sephardic Jews of Dorcol meant mother.

Unfortunately, this unique ethnic community, which lived in Dorcol for centuries and left a deep imprint on our culture in numerous areas, completely disappeared under the crimes of the German Nazis during WWII, and the memory of them is preserved through of this legendary expression.

The word ćale, on the other hand, originated as an abbreviation for “ćaća”, which is a characteristic name of the father on the “west side”.
