He was killed at the gate on August 4, 1991, and the attackers fled in a white Mercedes, green Ford or white golf, they are the official versions of this event.
Branislav Matić Beli was born in 1952 in Belgrade. At the age of 12, in the church of Voždovac, he met Đorđe Božović Giška, and from that moment on, the two became inseparable friends. When he had already acquired a name, Beli left for Western Europe, and since then he has not been heard from for years, until his return to Belgrade in 1981.
There were rumors that he made his first money in Europe by reselling fuel vouchers, and it was said that he was the owner of one of the largest auto junkyards in Amsterdam. In any case, when it comes to his business in Serbia, it was rumored that he owned at least 70 car wrecks in our country through which he washed stolen cars abroad, but also money. However, the police never found any confirming evidence. Also, it is true for Beli that he was in prison only once because he set fire to the apartment of a taxi driver who raped his girlfriend, and he received a six-month sentence for that.
Serbian Guard
In the late 1980s, Branislav Matić Beli supported the policies of then-President Slobodan Milošević, and his support went so far that he even donated 10,000 marks to the Serbian Renaissance Loan.
However, in the early 1990s, Beli became one of the most staunch opponents of the ruling regime and became the main financier of the Serbian Renewal Movement (SPO), founded by Vuk Draskovic. In fact, in the big protests on March 9 he was with Draskovic, Giska, Aleksandar Knezevic Knele and Jovan Otasevic.
On June 4, 1991, together with his best friend Giška, Beli founded the Serbian Guard, a paramilitary formation run by the SPO. According to unofficial data, up to 40,000 people passed through the unit and operated in the armed conflicts in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The unit did not last long, so it disintegrated in early 1992. Before her death, there are certain stories, Beli received warnings to disband the unit, which she did not do. He recalled that an official of the time sent them a message: “They will not make me Sparta in the heart of Belgrade.”
Gishka’s farewell, which is still recounted today
Branislav Matić Beli’s funeral was attended by many people, including the president of the SPO, Vuk Drašković, who also carried the coffin, as well as his inseparable friend Đordje Božović Giška. It was he who had an emotional speech at his friend’s funeral, which is often retold even today:
Revenge, brothers, revenge for this goes on, this can’t go on like this. From today I will grow a beard, I will shave my beard, brothers, when Serbia wins the war beforehand and when I shave it with the blood of its executioners. “The ancestor was thinking of killing 10 enemies and 10 of his executioners, he didn’t want to, because he would kill Serbia,” he said at the time.
Fire broke out at the door
Returning from the Serbian Guard review in Takovo on August 4, 1991, Beli arrived at his address in Voždovac. His wife got out of the car first, then a neighbor with two children, and then Gishka’s girlfriend. After her, Beli got out of the car, when fire was opened on him.
What is known is that the attackers fired from a white computer, in which they were waiting for Beli, and then they left in a car of which it is still unknown with certainty what color it was and what color it was. Police counted 27 bullet shells on the ground.
Friends of Branislav Matić Beli claimed in later confessions that a few weeks after his death, they were shown in Voždovac by a young inspector Rade Avramovski, who assured them that the case would be solved quickly, but when a bomb was thrown at the then Bananas cafe. As a result of what that inspector suffered, it became clear to them that someone great was behind everything.
