Patriarch Porfirio was enthroned in the Belgrade Cathedral of the Holy Archangel Michael.
Yesterday he was elected the new head of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
“The solemn act of enthronement of the newly elected Archbishop of Peja, Metropolitan of Belgrade and Karlovac and Patriarch of Serbia Mr. Porphyry began with the Holy Synod of Bishops in the Cathedral of the Holy Archangel in Belgrade. The Holy Liturgy is presided over by the newly elected first hierarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church, with the co-service of the patriarchal archbishops, the clergy and the faithful, “states the Serbian Orthodox Church on its website.
The liturgy began at 9 o’clock. After enthronement in the Cathedral Church, Patriarch Porphyry must be presented to the throne of the Serbian Patriarchs in the Patriarchate of Peja, the historical seat of the head of the Serbian Orthodox Church. The public will be informed about that date later, the Serbian Orthodox Church announced.
The bishops, led by Patriarch Porfirio, received the sacrament of communion, the Eucharist. It is a sacred secret in which pious Christians, under the guise of bread and wine, receive the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.
This sacred secret, because of its immense importance, constitutes the essence of the worship of the most important Christian church, the holy liturgy. The citizens present also received communion.
Metropolitan Porfirio was presented to the throne of the Archbishop of Peja, the Metropolitan of Belgrade and Karlovac and the Serbian Patriarch in the Belgrade Cathedral of the Holy Archangel Michael.
The prayer ceremony is attended by several ministers of the Government of Serbia, as well as representatives of all religious communities. The president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, and the Serbian member of the presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Milorad Dodik, also came to the church. The ceremony was also attended by the president of the “Liberation” movement, Mladjan Đorđević. The First Belgrade Singing Society, led by Svetlana Vilić, also participates in the liturgy. The patriarch’s enthronement was attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikola Selaković, the Minister of Labor, Employment, Veterans and Social Affairs, Darija Kisić Tepavčević, as well as the Minister of the Interior, Aleksandar Vulin, and the director of the BIA Bratislav Gašić.
The delivery of the cacique’s flags, accompanied by shouts of “dignity”, means that the patriarch has been presented to the throne.
The Patriarch of Porphyry should give an introductory sermon.
He received 31 votes in yesterday’s session of Parliament. Bishop Irinej of Bačka received 30 votes, while Bishop Jefrem of Banja Luka received 25 votes. Bishops Irinej and Jefrem were among the candidates with the most votes in previous elections for patriarch.
