Bishop Pahomije of Vranje, Bishop Siluan of Australia and New Zealand and Bishop Lavrentije of Sabac will not attend tomorrow’s election session of the Serbian Orthodox Church. As things stand now, 43 bishops will attend the session. According to the Synod, the session begins at noon and the patriarch must be elected before 3 p.m.

The votes of the archbishops who died as a result of the coronavirus – Patriarch Irinej, Metropolitan Amfilohije and Bishop Milutin of Valjevo – will belong to the bishops who manage their Dioceses.

Thus, Bishop Joanikije of Budva-Niksic will have two votes in the election of the future patriarch: his and one vote that would otherwise belong to the Metropolitan Amfilohije. When it comes to who will inherit the vote of Patriarch Irinej, there are doubts.

According to the Constitution of the Serbian Orthodox Church, that vote belongs to the guardian of the throne until the election of a new patriarch, or as it is called in ecclesiastical terminology, “place of the monk”, and which is now Bishop Chrysostom of Dabro-Bosnia . However, after the death of Patriarch Irinej, the Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church divided this church function by appointing Bishop Jovan of Šumadija as administrator of the diocese of Belgrade-Karlovac, which belonged to the patriarch.

The latest news before Parliament says: Bishop Lavrentije de Sabac was hospitalized yesterday. By the way, he was supposed to preside over Parliament as the oldest archbishop. He also has the voice of the late Bishop Milutin of Valjevo, because Bishop Lavrentije administers this diocese.

The information service of the Serbian Orthodox Church announced that instead of Bishop Lavrentije, Bishop Vasilije of Srem will preside over the electoral assembly.

Parliamentary Election Calendar: When to Vote

The assembly takes place in the crypt of the Temple of San Sava, and not as before in the Patriarchate. The crypt has been specially prepared for the session and there are monitors in front of the bishop, who will speak into microphones.

According to the established agenda, which was approved by the Synod, last night a dinner was held at the patriarchal court. Election Day begins today at 9 a.m. with a liturgy, followed by a breakfast at the rectory starting at 11 a.m.

The electoral session begins at noon in the crypt of the Temple of San Sava. The Synod, having determined the order of the day and the calendar, practically foresaw that the Assembly of elections would end at 7:00 p.m. and that by then a patriarch would be elected. The first part of the assembly, according to the program, should last about 30 minutes, from 12 to 12.30. Then a break is planned and then the session will continue.

In recent history, the election of Patriarch Pavle lasted the longest. A total of nine rounds of voting until the third candidate was obtained, who was also the future patriarch.
