A fire broke out in an Asian restaurant in a shopping center in Belgrade, which was extinguished thanks to the composure of the brave Dejan Novićević. The extinction action video made the rounds on social media, and Dejan told “Blic” about dramatic moments that we didn’t get a chance to see in the video.
– I work in a shopping center, more precisely in a company that deals with the security of the shopping center. I got to work around 7.45pm and heard through “motorola” from a colleague that there was a fire in that restaurant. However, a colleague asked for his message to be repeated, as communication through those devices is a bit confusing … I got up and ran there, the brave Dejan Novićević, a professional athlete and MMA fighter, the story begins for “Blic”.
When he got to the restaurant, thick gray smoke was already spreading through the corridors … He went behind the restaurant and tried to enter from the back.
– Another colleague was with me, I took the extinguisher and went inside. The smoke was really big, so I tried to get to the hot spot while running, but nothing was visible. A colleague and I barely found a way out. I blindly turned off what I could, and then I left – Dejan tells us.
The entire extinguishing action, he says, lasted about seven or eight minutes, and the video that sparked a flood of comments on social media shows only the last minute, when the matter was practically done.
– I came from the front and jumped the stage. A colleague handed me a PP device and I went inside again and only then did I see the fire coming from the direction of the respirator. The problem was that all the media on the device was returned to me due to the respirator that was still on. By this time, the smoke was already so high that alarms went off in the center – Dejan tells us.
Every time he went in, as he explained to us, he tried to protect his face with a mask and a sweatshirt. However, the fire extinguisher soaked his sweatshirt after several attempts, so he had to take it off. During that time, his colleague took care of the security of the guests.
– We are trained to react in such situations. My face was protected until the moment I couldn’t, because everything was soaked. To go back in and check if the fire was out, I took everything off and that was the moment that was recorded in the video – this brave young man tells us, explaining that an additional risk was the fact that there are a lot of bottles with different gases and that luckily something did not explode.
When the firefighters arrived, the fire had already been stopped.
He also revealed to us that this is not his first firefighting action, and that he found himself in the same situation ten years ago.
