What did Stefan Nemanja or anyone in the history of Serbia do wrong for this criminal regime to erect a monument to him?
Shaping it with its mediocre aesthetics, its complexes, its intellectual misery, is a question from the artist Dejan Atanacković in the protest against the construction of the Stefan Nemanja monument.
The protest against the erection of the monument to Stefan Nemanja began tonight on the plateau in front of the Faculty of Philosophy at 6 pm, two hours before the inauguration ceremony of the monument in Sava Square.
The protest was organized by the Society for the Sustainable Future – Koraci and the citizens were led by the visual artist and writer – Dejan Atanacković; art historian and activist Aida Ćorović and surprise guests.
Among those gathered were Dušan Petričić, cartoonist from NIN, Rade Radnovanović, columnist from Danas, Zoran Živković and his son Marko Živković from Nova Stranka, Marko Oljača from Koraci society.
Citizens came to the protest in small groups and thus behaved during the speeches of the speakers, without crowds, at a distance, most with epidemiological masks and in the open air.
The artist Dejan Atanackovic has long criticized the solution for the construction of this monument, and on the eve of its erection, he asked the opposition to promise that, if he wins power, the removal of the monument to Stefan Nemanja from this place will be between the first decisions. Immediately before the protest, he explained to Danas why he believes citizens should rebel against the way the current government shapes the monumental symbols of Belgrade.
Atanackovic believes that the Stefan Nemanja monument should be part of the SNS government’s collection of “failures” and relics when it becomes a thing of the past.
– What did Stefan Nemanja do wrong to raise him today with money stolen from the citizens of Belgrade and Serbia? To be part of the criminal plan, to remain in the plot of Belgrade as a foreign body, as an eternal reminder, with the destroyed train station and the criminal Belgrade in the water, of a vulgar, thief and lying regime that has taken over Serbia and we will poison, destroy, loot until we remove them from power, Atanackovic said.
On the eve of her speech, activist Aida Ćorović told Danas that she would speak from the point of view of an art historian, but also as someone who comes from Novi Pazar, that is, the Raska region where the Nemanjić come from, where are his most important monasteries and donations, as well as his family. He chided the current government for completely neglecting the profession in making a solution for the monument, adding that no one dislikes the idea of paying tribute to Stefan Nemanja, but the way it was done.
– Is that the patriotism with which this government is digging its chest? Bring in a Russian artist who hasn’t even seen Nemanjić’s donations, instead of asking our teachers and artists? It is a shame that we did not erect a monument to the ancestor of our first royal dynasty much earlier, but it must be in accordance with tradition and what that dynasty left behind. Simeon was a reflection of modesty and dedication to faith and God, and this monument is the opposite of that, it is a reflection of the arrogance, megalomania and ignorance of this government – noted Ćorović.
Veselinovic develops banner “Against electoral theft”
The President of the Movement for Change, Janko Veselinović, and the activists developed an “Against Electoral Theft” banner at the corner of Sarajevo and Nemanjina streets last night, because the police did not allow them to go near Sava Square and hold a conference on the opening. from the Stefan Nemanja monument, two hours before the ceremony. At the scene, Veselinovic told reporters that police forces told them that his banner could be harassing some citizens. “What you see now in front of the train station is the square that citizens cannot approach. Only the members of the Serbian Progressive Party have an invitation there tonight. We don’t know anything about the construction of the square and the monument: not how much it cost, not who chose the contractor and how much it will cost to the citizens of Serbia, “emphasized Veselinović. He said that it would not happen if we had free and fair elections, which is why they extended the aforementioned banner.
