Professor Branislav Tiodorović, epidemiologist and member of the Crisis Staff for the fight against coronavirus, said this morning that there was no disagreement in yesterday’s session on the measures for the New Year holidays. He expressed fear for the private parties, which will be organized for the reception, and called on everyone to be aware that it will be their turn and the question is whether they will have places in hospitals. At that time, he also claimed that a girl who was born in 1993 had passed away.
– It is a difficult question, but we always have to find the answer. We have another difficult situation, although at first glance it seems that the number of positive, sick and even deceased is decreasing. It is important to protect our health, and the health of all of us, to watch where we are going. This time, however, we have to celebrate the New Year in a different way, and say goodbye to the old man, who was difficult and too difficult, and hope to be healthier in the New Year – said prof. Dr. Tidorović for First Television.
There was no disagreement in the crisis staff
He said there was no disagreement yesterday about the catering facility’s working hours on New Years Eve.
– I have to say with pleasure that I said in the conference on Friday that I hope we agree, that is, that there will be no New Year’s Eve, nor repetitions. And we must think about that, so that the first of January does not become what we do not want. That means fewer contacts. However, we agree that the cafes and restaurants will be open until 6 p.m. on December 31 and January 1, and that all services, shops, cafes, restaurants will be open until 8 p.m. … All this is valid until on January 11, when we will assess the situation. – says prof. Tiodorović.
According to him, behind closed doors, there were no attitudes that contradicted what the medical part of the staff was asking for.
– I am pleased to note that even those who stood firm in their positions due to the economy did not publicly object. I see that the media tried to point out that there was disagreement, but it was not. There is no organized New Year’s Eve, the only thing that scares me and my colleagues now is whether those private parties could be a big risk, he said.
Aware that there will be, he said that those who organize them and who go to those parties should think that it will be their turn, and the question is whether there will be places in the hospitals.
– Can we hospitalize everyone who needs it? Our girlfriend, born in 1993, died the other day. Isn’t that terrible? We have young people. More than 60 percent of hospitalizations are active people. Among the dead, more than 72 percent are older. Do young people think they are safe? For me, it is an important fact when a person dies in 1993 – he said.
If there is a party, he pointed out, that after January 15 or 20, we will have a wave that will be no less fierce than this:
– I guarantee that there is no one and that there is no one in the family or environment who has become ill and even died of the crown.
When asked why crisis staff meet every two to three days, he explained that the reason lies in the heavy burden on the health system.
– We are in contact with the medical staff several times during the day. You’re right, people want more optimism. This is not the time for that. Let’s be patient now, let’s put up with this so that we can celebrate the upcoming holidays as we should – said prof. Dr. Tiodorović.
I have not yet arrived for the vaccine
He said the culprit is in a slight decline, but the death toll, which is at a high level, remains worrying.
– Hospitals are still a big problem for us. There is still pressure in Belgrade, the situation is a little better in the rest of Serbia. This trend is not yet what we would like, we must be careful – said prof. Dr. Tiodorović.
He is convinced that we have a herd immunity of more than 30 percent.
– I hope that with the vaccination in February, we will have about 40 percent, so that we can think about a more serious mitigation of measures only there in the spring. Then we can think that we are on the green branch and that we are coming back to life before this – he said, adding that he has not yet received the vaccine, because, as he said, it is not his turn yet.
