Igora Maksimović (33) from Petrovaradin was sentenced in the first instance to two years in prison at the Novi Sad Court of First Instance, because her husband Rade’s dogs ate Đurađ Marcheta (84), her first neighbor, four years ago .

The prosecution accuses her of a serious crime against public safety.

The tragedy in which a man died occurred on July 11, 2016, in the courtyard of the house number 92 on Bukovački put street in Petrovaradin. Two American Staffordshire Terriers, roaming freely, although there are boxes for them in the yard, around six in the morning, supposedly seeing a cat in Marcheta’s yard, they barked fiercely at him, then jumped over the wire fence and they attacked the old man, who tried. to defend the cat and separate it from the dogs.

At the trial, Igora said that, until the judicial expert presented the information about the mongrel dogs in question, neither she nor her husband knew that they were a dangerous species. According to what she said, her husband was not at home and, at his request, which he relayed to him in a telephone conversation, allowed the dogs to enter the fenced yard. He didn’t even think that dogs could hurt someone or jump over a fence.

“Everything was happening in our area at the time, there were even shootings,” Maksimovic said in his defense, adding:

“For our safety, and especially for the children, we have dogs.”

Dissatisfied with the ruling, Igora Maksimović filed an appeal against this verdict with the Novi Sad Court of Appeal. His defense attorney, attorney Vladimir Horovic, also announces that he will appeal.

“We have not yet received the verdict. When we do receive it, of course, we will appeal the court’s decision,” says lawyer Horovic.

Igor, who was looking after the dogs while her husband was away from work, ran out and tried to help his neighbor, but sadly he had no way out. The dogs caused the most head injuries.
