In the temples, the rites of consecration and cutting of Slavic cakes are usually performed, but with the application of protective measures.
Although there are no general instructions, the practice in dioceses differs somewhat. Some have brought their own internal instructions, in order to limit the number of people who will be in churches at the same time. Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker is the protector of a large number of Serbian families, it is considered the most common baptismal holiday, so concerns about epidemiological risk are justified.
– The life of prayer in our temples unfolds as usual, and it seems that it will be the same for Saint Nicholas. That means serving Slavic cake-cutting liturgies and rituals, as said in our newspaper in the Archdiocese of Belgrade and Karlovac, to which the largest number of places of worship in Belgrade belong. – General recommendations on behavior during the epidemic are taken for granted.
LISTEN TO THE DOCTORS!
THE RITE of consecration and cutting of the feast cake, most often in the temple, is considered an integral part of the celebration of the day dedicated to the saint, the protector.
– That is the essence of baptism and the church cannot reject anyone who wants to participate in worship. However, we call on believers to be responsible, follow instructions and listen to the advice of doctors, they say in the temples of Belgrade.
The church has repeatedly asked believers to avoid crowds, keep their distance, and apply protective measures.
The Archdiocese appeals that San Nicolás, although there are no stricter state measures, be celebrated in the closest circle of the family and without guests.
Many dioceses of the Serbian Orthodox Church have organized the performance of religious rites in the newly created situation, according to their local needs and customs.
In the central parish of Nis, believers were told that, as usual, they could bring celebratory cakes if the state did not declare mandatory quarantine.
– The service of the liturgy and the consecration of the cakes also depend on that – they told the believers in Nis.
In some parishes, the “regime” of celebration rites, which was established last spring, still applies. It involves the individual reading of prayers, without grouping of believers, as well as the required distance and disinfection of objects and spaces. There were also examples of scheduling appointments for the consecration of cereals and cakes, in order to minimize the risk of contact.
