After it was declared in Brussels this week that Serbia does not fulfill the conditions to open new chapters in the accession negotiations, EP Rapporteur for Serbia Vladimir Bilčik told H1 that swift and concrete actions by the Belgrade authorities are necessary when it comes to improving the rule of law and freedom. media, and that based on these specific moves, the EU will assess Serbia’s ability to open new chapters. The Minister of European Integration, Jadranka Joksimović, estimates that there will be no opening of new chapters due to internal circumstances of the EU itself.
When asked by H1 European correspondent Nikola Radisic how he sees the unscrupulous attacks and labeling of opposition leaders and independent media in the Serbian Parliament, the European Parliament rapporteur says that Brussels expects visible and urgent changes.
“What will be in my progress report depends on what happens from today until March 2021. We must see concrete movements, concrete changes in Serbia from now until March. I hope that these concrete movements of the Serbian Government can affect not only” to my report, but also to the opening of new chapters. Therefore, the Serbian authorities still have little time, in the coming weeks to take concrete measures, “said Bilcic.
The Minister for European Integration, Jadranka Joksimović, believes that Serbia’s progress towards accession to the European Union cannot be measured solely by opening a chapter in the negotiations.
“Although we have not made much progress in the accession process itself, although the EU is also facing Brexit, budgetary problems and everything else, I think this year has shown that we are closer to the European Union than ever. Because we have demonstrated resilience of our economy. Because we have shown that we have not been a burden to anyone this year, but we have responsibly faced a crisis that is a global crisis of unprecedented proportions, “said Minister Joksimović.
Regarding the specific measures mentioned by Bilčik, the Chairman of the People’s Party, Vuk Jeremić, after speaking with the European reporter, hopes that a political dialogue between the government and the opposition will soon begin.
“I drew Mr. Bilchik’s attention to the fact that the government will do absolutely everything possible to delay the start of that dialogue as long as possible, because it is clear to them that this dialogue will have to result in conditions for elections better than 2020. The government cannot allow another twist – elections that will result in no opposition in parliament, “Jeremic said.
Diplomat Ivan Vujacic says that the opening of new chapters has long concealed that there are no real reforms in Serbia.
“The chapters are not so important at the moment, since the important thing is that Serbia is not progressing and now it has obviously become aware that it is not progressing. And there is no escape from that, there are no false excuses, the ball is in. our yard and Serbia would have to deal with “that,” Vujacic thinks.
In an interview with N1, Bilčik also said that he understood that there were many young MPs in the Serbian Parliament and that the European Parliament would try to work with them, inviting them to Brussels, to improve democracy in Serbia.
