A meeting, many boycott leaders at the same table, and an idea. Like an “apple of discord” thrown among the writers, it became much more than a dispute, it became a possibility around which opposition leaders would unite. This is Boris Tadic’s idea of forming a “Boycott” list. Is it the final unification or the ultimate division of the opposition?
It is not true that this is the first time that such an idea has been heard in public. Many have already mentioned, considered and rejected it. However, when it comes to a meeting and from the ex-president and leader of the Social Democratic Party, it seems that it becomes more tangible. How did Tadic describe it?
– I proposed a compromise solution – for the united opposition to go to the polls on a list that would be called the “Boycott List”. The parties would make it clear that they will not participate in the work of parliament, but also that they are against the Vučić government, Tadić said, among other things. That, he said, would be an extension of the boycott policy.
The need for this compromise solution arose at a time when passions were stirring again on the scene of the political boycott. The crisis caused by the coronary virus pandemic raised suspicions among them, so the Free Citizens Movement, which was in favor of the boycott, changed their mind and went to the polls. On the other hand, some remained firm in their decision to skip the June 21 elections as political candidates.
Commitment to save voters
– It seems to me that this idea is an attempt not to give up the idea of a boycott, but to adapt it. The crisis has changed everything, and this came out as a commitment to preserve voters who boycott the opposition. With reconsideration in the opposition bloc, Tadic’s idea emerged as a consequence of the fact that previously made decisions were firm and raised voter expectations: Cesid CEO Bojan Klacar explains by “Blic”.
However, according to him, this decision brings with it good and bad things. Let’s start with the bad guys.
The negative aspects of Tadic’s proposal
– The opposition is in a complex position. Essentially, looking at the practical consequences, the idea is very difficult to realize. If the “Boycott” list is formed, the opposition should now ask its voters to go to the polls, to eventually enter the institutions, the parliament, and not to fight for the interests of citizens later, because they will not participate in parliament work, says Klacar.
He explains another bad characteristic of said list, and that is that it is a large number of parties, and that the question is who guarantees that some of them will not enter the Assembly after a good electoral result.
– We recall that in 2016, Tadić went to the polls in a coalition with Cedomir Jovanović and Nenad Čanko, and after that they separated and some deputies went to other parliamentary groups – explains Klačar.
Positive tension for the construction of strategies.
However, the idea of Tadic has its good sides, and according to our interlocutor, they are in a compromise.
– This is a good solution to get out of the situation you are in now, because you are not against or even a boycott. Based on the positive tension that would be generated, a strategy could be developed for the elections in 2022, says Klačar.
In any case, the political parties that attended the aforementioned meeting largely symbolically called “apples of discord” and a few days later expressed their sympathy or disgust at the newly established idea. The first to like were, now former boycotters: the Free Citizens Movement.
Parts divided around the idea.
– Considering that the Serbian progressive party is much more affected by the boycott of the parliament than the boycott of the elections, because after the boycott of the elections, the boycott of the parliament ends, the solution given by Boris Tadic is completely fine. In this way, we cleanse the Assembly of the “false” opposition, we retain the legitimacy to continue the talks with the international community and always be ready to enter and offer resistance in the Assembly itself, the leader of the Movement of Free Citizens Sergej Trifunovic. parties on this topic.
As “Blic” already wrote, at the aforementioned meeting, some of the parties, such as the “Doors” and “Let’s not drown Belgrade” movements, said they would reconsider their decision to boycott, and some remained firm, so the idea from a joint list She didn’t like it.
Miroslav Aleksić, vice president of the Popular Party, said on the occasion of the proposal by the president of the Social Democratic Party Boris Tadić that the opposition goes to the polls on the “boycott list”, that “the method is not applicable and the wolf is full and sheep are numbered. “
– The opposition can show unity and coherence if it firmly adheres to the decision that everyone boycott the system that destroys the future of Serbia and our children, and all other combinatorics are technically unfeasible and irresponsible. The opposition must understand that the trust of citizens is difficult to win and that it is necessary to show how ready it is for the victim, Aleksić said.
Zoran Lutovac, the chairman of the Democratic Party, agrees with him, and recently joined in parliamentary clubs with Boris Tadic’s SDS.
– Without questioning Tadic’s good intention of finding a compromise between PSG, who has changed his mind and wants to go to the polls, and everyone else in the opposition who did not express that intention, I think go to the polls, whatever be the name of the list is coming out, for citizens, after all, just going to the polls – said Lutovac for Danas.
It also points out that there are more than 8,000 polling stations in Serbia and that is why the question arises who would be responsible for more than 20,000 DS members who would be deliberately exposed to health risks in polling stations and for the voters who would vote for the DS.
– Even when it was first put in in October last year, this idea was difficult to explain, and is now almost inexplicable, considering that in addition to autocracy and closed media, we also have a ban on meetings and danger to the health of citizens due to the pandemic – says Lutovac.
However, since the elections are in about 50 days, decisions of the opposition boycott (or ex-boycott) must be made soon, and the “apple of discord” or “apple of unification” must be judged soon. , one way or another.
