After the news that Serbian patriarch Irinej’s health condition due to complications with the corona virus suddenly deteriorated, in his hometown of Vidova, near Čačak, silence and disbelief. Everyone is still waiting for a miracle and for his beloved cousin to win the battle, because he is known as a great fighter and extremely brave. His daughter-in-law, a strong and kind old woman, Desa Gavrilović, eagerly awaits news from Belgrade about her “bat”, as she still calls the Serbian patriarch.
“Our Irinej is the best man I know. When I was young, he helped me a lot with the children. To change clothes, dress them, take them for a walk. It’s the same now, he takes care of me, what I need is there for me, wood for the winter, he provided me with everything. It was very hard for me when I heard that he was ill, God forbid I die. My grandson is coming in about ten days, I hope we will visit him then “, says this old woman with tears in eyes for the RINA agency, while still waiting for his “brother” to survive.
Above Desa’s house, there is a house where Patriarch Irinej was born and spent the first years of his life. Today his cousin, Dejan Gavrilovic, who last saw the patriarch two months ago, lives there.
“He never forgot his hometown, he almost came to visit the works of the church that is rising in his part on the hill above our houses. He is a great man, who helps everyone with words and deeds. He is always there to listen and understand. It is a great honor to be related to him and to have the same roots. I remember him as a wonderful uncle and a true clergyman. Everyone who has seen him at least once in their life has only had wonderful words for him, because such a man is born only once, ”says Dejan.
Serbian Patriarch Irinej was born in 1930 in the village of Vidova near Čačak as Miroslav Gavrilović. He finished primary school in his hometown, secondary school in Čačak, seminary in Prizren in 1951, and then the Faculty of Theology in Belgrade. He was ordained a monk at the Rakovica monastery in 1959.
