Dr Gorica Đokić from the Serbian Physicians and Pharmacists Union said that, according to the union’s data, 43 doctors have died from the coronavirus since the start of the pandemic, but that they fear that the figure is not final.
“We are not educated for that, we are not so mentally conceived as to send people to die, but to save them. We cannot take that long, this is really too much for all of us,” Djokic told Nova.rs.
“We base our list on testimonies and data received from the families of deceased colleagues and public announcements,” says Djokic, noting that the majority of the deceased are in Belgrade, followed by Nis and Novi Sad.
He points to Čačak’s example as emotionally excruciatingly difficult, when his mentors, who taught them anesthesiology and general medicine, were killed by doctors.
An example that illustrates what healthcare workers face is the fact that 90 percent of the Main Board of the Physicians and Pharmacists Union works in kovid hospitals or is ill.
It is performed in extremely difficult conditions and circumstances.
“Imagine you can’t go to the bathroom for 12 hours and you can’t drink water for four hours before that, so add in the weight of work and all the other physical circumstances,” explains Dr. Đokić.
He also points out that the problem is the lack of official data.
“Anything we ask for is hard to come by. However, it is emerging more and more, in recent months, people have just spoken,” says Đokić.
The statement of the deputy director of the Infectious Diseases Clinic, Ivana Milošević, shows that the situation, with regard to health workers and their state of health, is alarming.
He expressed great concern for his colleagues last week.
“Doctors wear respirators. I care about colleagues. Don’t expose yourself to the virus, follow the measures. We can’t put up with this for long,” Milosevic said.
