The architect and artist Andrej Josifovski, better known as the “Pianist”, made an unusual portrait floating on water made of old plastic bottles on the occasion of World River Day, thus expanding the limits of art.
The pianist made a portrait of Jovan Memedović, our famous presenter, a man who, according to the author, is “a sincere fighter for the preservation of the environment and rivers”.
The exhibition measures 20 meters long by 12 wide and occupies an area of 240 square meters, and the curiosity is that it is the first artistic effort of its kind, where a character is outlined assembling a mosaic of discarded plastic bottles collected from the rivers.
Josifovski says that the project was created at the site of the EKOStar PAK recycling center in Belgrade, from where the bottles were transferred to the Sava between the Old and the new railway bridge.
– The reason for the work entitled “SAVE OUR HOUSE” – “Let’s save our house” and the entire “Cleaning” project, arose from the desire to raise awareness about the importance of conserving nature, as well as the importance of recycling waste to achieve this goal – says Josifovski.
All the work was carried out symbolically on World River Day, an official UN holiday, which includes various actions to clean waterways and renew habitats, educational programs, as well as the promotion of ecology.
Fifteen friends helped Josifovski make a portrait of a bottle and it took five days of constant and hard work. Upon completion, the bottles were pulled from the river and taken away for recycling.
He also says that this summer he spent a lot of time on his favorite river, the Sava, and watched in disbelief at all the great waste it carries.
– I decided to collect it to create a work with it that shows, at least for a moment, that the beauty of the river is something that must be nurtured. Just as human eyes are the mirror of the soul, rivers are the mirror of nature. We must be responsible, because we do not live alone in this world, but as part of a universal ecosystem. On this occasion, I wanted to draw attention to serious problems, which as a civilized society, we should not have. It is inadmissible, for example, to promote recycling and then throw garbage in the same pile. For now, the conscience about it is very bad, and this document was supposed to show that recycled waste has a useful purpose. In the end, this work also served to convey the message, because why beauty if it does not develop wings – says Josifovski.
He admits that all the production of the drawings was very slow, although previously it was designed with precision and that at the beginning of the work it was shown that it would take a long time to weave 4,000 bottles on the net. Soon help came from everywhere, from friends, colleagues, colleagues …
– Perhaps the hardest part was weaving bottles into a net according to a previously drawn pattern. It took me more than three days to call my friends for help on the last day, because the work was endless. Afterwards, I painted the valeri on the bottles. The most demanding thing was to place all the bottles so that they could be transported. They were four large rollers 2.4 to 3.6 meters long. Even though it was my first time doing something like this, I thought I would make it. I would like to thank all my friends who were with me and helped me with all their heart – says the pianist.
As the next step of such a project, Josifovski points out that it should be a one-time action in the municipalities most “hit” by tourists this summer, and then it will be dedicated to the sculptures that he has already started working in the wild dumps.
Memedović: This is a great part!
Obviously moved by the unusual gesture, well-known presenter and author of the “Quite Naturally” program, Jovan Memedović, thanked Josifovski. – Today is World River Day, and the pianist did me a great honor and marked this day with my portrait – wrote Memedović briefly.
