30 MEMBERS AND A DECISION The dissonant tones in crisis personnel are becoming more pronounced, and the clock ticks faster and faster at midnight, what measurements are on the table FOR THE NEW YEAR

The New Year is just around the corner, and the question of all questions is which of the two sides will prevail: the medical or financial side of crisis personnel? The final decision on how we will celebrate the holidays should be made on Monday, and it seems that the atmosphere in the next session will be very uncertain.

There is no doubt that everyone agrees that public health is paramount, but it is still no secret that there have long been differences among crisis staff members in their views on anti-epidemic measures. .

However, it seems that all members of the Crisis Staff share the opinion that curfew is not an option, at least we could conclude based on the statements they made when the number of new patients per day was twice what is now.

After almost a month since the catering and service facilities could only be open until 5:00 p.m. on weekdays, as of this week and weekend it was decided to extend the working hours until 8:00 p.m.

It would seem that the “economic wing” won in the last session of the Crisis Staff, because, as the epidemiologist Dr. Predrag Kon pointed out this morning, the medical part of the Staff opposed the opening of shopping centers.

– But on the other hand, if the measures are followed when they go to shopping centers to buy gifts, there may be less contagion. Also, if the shopping centers have to function, the measures must be respected, there must be guards … The same goes for catering facilities – Dr. Kon told TV Nova.

He explained last night that the medical part of the Crisis Staff “did not yield to the introduction of softer measures and did not agree to a compromise.”

– It is a question of whether we made a compromise or we agreed that economic reasons prevailed at that time – noted Dr. Kon in the Belgrade Chronicle on RTS and explained his statement:

– It was decided to extend the working day, that is, the working day that was given until 8:00 p.m. and within that we continue to insist that something change, and that it be not four square meters but nine square meters in shopping centers, classes and reduce that density in shopping centers. It is something that has also been decided and recorded in a regulation.

He compared the last session to the situation during the first wave of the epidemic, when the medical part of Headquarters demanded that it be closed on the weekend around May 6, and as he said, “then only Professor Nestorović thought he shouldn’t close”.

“We will protest if there is a greater flexibility of the measures”

As things are now, there will be no New Year’s Eve, because otherwise, as Dr. Kon announced, the medical side of Headquarters will protest.

– The protest means that we are ready to clearly show that we are against any organization of the reception, because that can only make the situation worse. Especially now that our hospitals are full. He’s to blame now that he’s falling a bit, but it’s far from good. We Crisis staff must be clear and say that we are against any welcome – Dr. Kon emphasized this morning.

Judging by his statement, the doctors who are part of the Crisis Staff share the same opinion.

– There should be no organized reception in any case! I am glad that all colleagues support him wholeheartedly. There are no differences. It is also a matter of economic factors, but we as doctors cannot look at it, our epidemiologist pointed out.

His message is explicit:

– There are no negotiations on what I said, the crisis personnel have it clear. Even if the number of infected people were cut in half, that would not be enough. The position of the medical side of the crisis staff is clear and there is no possibility that that position will change by Monday, concluded Dr. Kon.

Doctors agree

And his colleague prof. Dr. Branislav Tiodorović is explicit in the position that an organized reception should not be allowed and believes that this decision will be supported by all members of the staff.

– I think there is no possibility of the catering facilities working for New Years Eve. The New Year, like Christmas, should be celebrated at home, in the circle of the closest family. The medical side of the crisis staff is against that and we are convinced that everyone in the crisis staff will support you – Prof. Dr. Tiodorović.

Asked yesterday at the press conference to comment on the increasingly evident differences in the attitudes of the medical and economic part of the Staff regarding the flexibility of the measures, prof. Dr. Tiodorović said:

– We must be aware that crisis personnel are in constant communication. We remain supporters of tough measures. The new measures are not a compromise. Today I realized that everyone is aware that relaxing the measures would lead to the fact that we already have new peaks and a new wave on January 10 or 20.

Immunologist Dr. Srdja Jankovic also said that doctors do not see the possibility of a significant relaxation of the measures and do not see the possibility of celebrating the New Year with meetings that are dangerous.

– The medical part of the Crisis Staff will mark certain red lines that we will not cross when softening the measures, we must not endanger the joint effort against the epidemic – said Dr. Janković.

By the way, he recently said that “it would have been better if the working hours had not been extended on Monday”, but that was his personal opinion.

How could the days be around the New Year

According to epidemiologist Tiodorović, the catering facilities will probably be running until 8:00 p.m. on December 31 and everything will be closed in Serbia on January 1.

– On January 2, only grocery stores and food delivery will work, as well as pharmacies and pumps in the refueling part – said prof. Dr. Tiodorović.

However, we have to wait until Monday, when a new session is scheduled and in which action must be taken on how we will celebrate the New Year holidays.

How are the round table sessions?

The fact that sessions often end in silence speaks to dissonant tones during crisis staff sessions, as well as that KS members are generally not in the mood for statements to the media.

Recently, the epidemiologist Tiodorović shared his impression of the environment in the sessions.

Crisis Personnel Session

– At the beginning of the pandemic, we had a greater impact than now. It should be known that the medical part of the crisis staff is the proponent, and the final decision on the proposal that is sent to the government is made by the crisis staff as a whole, said Prof. Dr. Tiodorović for Danas.

It is clear that there is a lot of pressure from those who have small or medium-sized businesses to relax because they are certainly in the biggest economic hit during the corona virus epidemic.

Yes, and doctors absolutely understand the needs of the economy, explained Prof. Dr. Tiodorović said that the pandemic is not only a medical problem, but also a social, psychological, economic and political one.

– We do not interfere in the economy, but we must respect it, because without the economy we will not be able to provide the conditions for the health system to function. We will not be able to acquire medicines, equipment, everything we need – said Tiodorović.

Dr. Kon also talked about that.

– There are other arguments of PKS, the city of Belgrade and they must be respected. When I hear their arguments, it gives me chills, like when they hear the arguments of a medical act – said Dr. Kon.
