From the beginning of the epidemic until now, the presence of Covid-19 has been confirmed in 220 children in Serbia, and according to previous experiences, most of them had a moderate or mostly mild clinical picture. Another 38 small patients remained in hospitals.
Experts explain that while we still don’t have complete data on the nature of this virus, the fact is that children tolerated it more easily than adults.
Why is this so, the immunologist prof. Dr. Borislav Kamenov explained by “Blic”. First, he notes, the immune system in children is still developing, which is actually an advantage, unlike the acquired immunity that adults already have.
– Adults have a specific acquired immunity that requires great involvement of the entire system and very often the necessary defense is overcome. However, in children the situation is different, they have innate and non-specific immunity when each cell solves the problem on its own. Therefore, the problem does not multiply throughout the body and that non-specific immunity is practically uncomplicated, correcting the errors in the cells, says Dr. Kamenov.
The experience of doctors in hospitals for greedy children also confirms that children with the virus had a moderate or mild clinical picture. 55 children who had a confirmed coronavirus or who had only symptoms passed through Kovid Children’s Hospital in Nis.
Prof. Dr. Andjelka Slavković, coordinator of the Kovid Children’s Hospital of the Clinical Center in Niš, says for “Blic” that currently only 11 of them are in the hospital, and that the other children were successfully cured and discharged .
– All children who had Covid-19, or symptoms, had a moderate to mild clinical picture. We had a child who had a severe clinical picture and was on oxygen, but we managed to cope and that child is now home. We immediately formed Kovid Children’s Hospital when the epidemic began, because we had to separate the children with the confirmed virus, but also with the symptoms, which is a special building that continues in both children’s clinics. The Kovid Center in Nis is run by pediatricians from the Children’s Internal Medicine Clinic with the support of pediatric anesthesiologists from the Nis Clinical Center Anesthesia Clinic. So far, 40 of them have successfully recovered and been discharged from the hospital, says Dr. Slavković.
So far, 148 children have passed through the KBC “Dragiša Mišović”, which was one of the crown childcare centers, while 24 children are currently being treated.
Furthermore, the Vojvodina Institute for the Protection of Children and Young People at KC Vojvodina was tasked with caring for younger patients. A total of nine children have been cared for there since the start of the epidemic. All the children had a milder clinical picture, and as we discovered, yesterday morning, up to four children were discharged after the second negative test, and three more children remained in the Institute under the supervision of the hospital.
When it comes to the Kragujevac Clinical Center, eight children, ages nine months to nine years, are being treated for coronary heart disease and Covid-19 disease. According to Predrag Sazdanović, the director of KC, these are children with parents who are from six different regions that belong to this KC. They are all in stable condition.
Younger patients keep coming to hospitals.
The important thing during the care of the virus-infected children was to separate them from the other children, and a rigorous control was carried out at the entrance of the hospital. In the part where the children who are cancer patients are housed, the virus could not reach them, the emergency surgeries of the cancer type were carried out without obstacles, as well as other emergency interventions.
– There was a rigorous control at the entrance, the children suspected of covid or in whom this virus was confirmed, were automatically separated and moved to the part destined for them. The conclusion is that the children certainly had a milder or more moderate clinical picture. Kovid Children’s Hospital will surely remain active for some time, because we still have a few cases, Dr. Slavković concludes.
