The news about the Izmir earthquake is closely followed by Burak Karahan (25) from The Hague. He hardly slept last night; his mother Ipek Akkus (50) and his sister Berfin Karahan (20) live in the Turkish city. They have a shoe store there. “My sister called me at work yesterday. She never does, so I knew immediately that something bad had happened,” Burak told NOS.

The women live on the first floor of an apartment complex in a badly affected area of Izmir, which was hit by an earthquake yesterday. Berfin was home when the ground began to shake. “Mirrors, big cabinets, everything suddenly fell to the floor. My sister ran out in a panic, like everyone else at that time. Fortunately the call via WhatsApp worked, because normal phone lines immediately fell,” says Burak .

Panic

His mother was working in the shoe store at the time of the earthquake. There, too, panic arose and everyone ran away. Mother and daughter went to a nearby park because the soccer stadium and other places designated by the authorities are not exactly around the corner.

“All the walls of the house are damaged. It was too dangerous to sleep there, many people spent the night outside or in their cars,” said Burak, who worked as a journalist in Turkey.

His mother was allowed to go home this morning to pick up some clothes. This she saw:
