Bayern Munich took a giant step towards the ninth consecutive national title on Saturday. The Bundesliga leader, thanks to a goal from Leon Goretzka, beat RB Leipzig 1-0, the only remaining competitor, and now has a seven-point lead over number two. With seven games to go, the championship is within reach of Bayern, who have accumulated 64 points in 27 games so far.
In the header game, Bayern had to cope without injured league top scorer Robert Lewandowski, while Jérôme Boateng and Alphonso Davies were absent on suspension. Justin Kluivert started on the bench for Leipzig, who had not lost eight consecutive league games. The game started a little later than planned. Manuel Neuer decided to repair a small crack in the Bayern net by tying a handkerchief in the net, but the referee did not accept it. It took a lot of effort for Neuer to untie the knot, after which the referee pulled ties to hold the net.
Expectations were high, but the game was initially not very attractive. The opportunities were rare; in the first half, Leipzig was in control, but Bayern managed to score after one of the few outbreaks. Joshua Kimmich found Thomas Müller with a beautiful ball, after which the attacker put the ball into the penalty area for Goretzka: 0-1. After the break, Kluivert made his entry as a substitute. He soon prepared an opportunity: a Kluivert center was spread by Amadou Haidara, after which an acrobatic display by Marcel Sabitzer narrowly sailed.
Shortly before that, Christopher Nkunku already missed a great opportunity from inside the penalty area. The first chances proved to be a precursor to the first fifteen minutes after the break, in which unsuccessful goal attempts were accumulated for Leipzig. For example, after an hour of play, Neuer had to stop a long shot from Marcel Sabitzer. However, the pace gradually slowed in the second half, making it easier for Bayern to maintain the lead. The visitors did not create anything for themselves, but they no longer encountered serious problems.
