The launch ceremony of the National Plan for the Operationalization of the Vaccine against Covid-19 was held, this Wednesday (16), with great crowds at the Planalto Palace. It even drew attention that Zé Gotinha, a character created for vaccination campaigns, was wearing a mask. But, as usual, President Jair Bolsonaro (no party), Health Minister General Eduardo Pazuello, and other federal government officials dismissed the use of the accessory.
As the column has already shown, the total dismissal of the mask at the federal government headquarters has been informally normalized. When you arrive at Planalto, this is already evident: not all receptionists and security guards wear the props. Most ministers follow the same understanding on the subject. This has caught the attention of some visitors.
Contempt for the use of equipment that helps prevent the spread of the coronavirus is a constant in the Bolsonaro government since the start of the pandemic, in March of this year. The president has already said that the effectiveness of the mask is “almost nil.” Speech contradicts what all medical and scientific, study-based classes say.
In August, Congress overthrew Bolsonaro’s veto on the text that forced the population to wear masks for the duration of the state of public calamity due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In the Federal District, the use of the protection element is mandatory in public areas from April 30. Otherwise, the citizen is subject to a fine of R $ 2,000 and may face the crime of violating a sanitary measure, the penalty of which can be up to one year in prison.
However, on several occasions, the president made public appearances, including at anti-democratic demonstrations, without using the equipment. Even the governor of the Federal District, Ibaneis Rocha (MDB), dispenses with the mask and has already published videos in which he is meeting with other authorities, including Pazuello, without any of them wearing the props.
