The government of São Paulo announced today that it will open 500 new beds for patients with covid-19 in order to try to prevent the collapse of the health system in the state. According to the direction of Governor João Doria (PSDB), during the month of March 339 ICU (Intensive Care Unit) beds and 161 more infirmaries will be opened.
Doria is committed to a greater supply of beds and the adoption of more restrictive measures to stop the circulation of the virus, which has been enhanced by the Manaus variant. Today, the governor announced that the entire state will go to the red phase of the São Paulo Plan, which determines the opening of essential activities only as of Saturday (6).
The measures announced at a press conference on the pandemic come a day after São Paulo reached a new record for daily deaths, with 468 deaths registered yesterday. The São Paulo government itself has a projection that, if current conditions are maintained, the collapse of the health system would occur in two weeks.
“In the last 24 hours, the unemployment center received 901 requests for admission to ICU beds. In practice, this means that São Paulo referred a covid patient every two minutes to public or private hospitals. It is the thermometer of this tragedy” .
João Doria (PSDB), Governor of São Paulo
The collapse means that COVID-19 patients may be left without medical care due to lack of beds. The situation is even more serious because the season of aggravation of the pandemic is national, which practically prevents the transfer of patients to other states to guarantee care, as was done at the beginning of the year in Manaus.
Doria’s management announced the opening of 500 beds in state and municipal hospitals, Santas Casas and other philanthropic health services. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the government claims that ICU beds have been expanded by 150%, from 3,500 to 8,500.
According to the most recent data from the São Paulo government, last night, the state had 75.3% of ICU beds occupied, while the occupancy was 76.7% in Greater São Paulo. However, two regions have already exceeded 90%: Araraquara and Presidente Prudente.
Currently, São Paulo has 7,415 patients with covid-19 hospitalized in the ICU and another 8,968 in wards, totaling 16,383 people recovering from the disease in the state.
