The World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said on Monday 27 that the pandemic of the new coronavirus is far from over and that it observes growth trends in Latin America, Africa, Asian countries and Europe. Oriental The statements come at a time when countries like Spain, Italy and France, three of the four most affected, plan to ease the confinements.
“The pandemic is far from over. WHO remains concerned about increasing trends in Africa, Eastern Europe, Latin America and some Asian countries. As in all regions, cases and deaths go unreported in many countries in these regions due to down to low test capacity, “said Tedros Adhanom.
When asked about countries that criticized WHO or did not follow the recommendations of the global entity, Tedros replied that the institution cannot compel countries to follow the advice. “We do not have a mandate to compel countries to implement what we recommend. It depends on whether they accept or reject,” he said.
“Some accept, others do not, but at the end of the day, everyone must shoulder their responsibilities. I guarantee that the WHO makes recommendations based on the best of science and scientific evidence.”
He also said that it was necessary to break with supporters in the fight against the pandemic. “We need to break these divisions of the right, the left … no party line should divide it. Listen to the communities, to the citizens, this is the solution: the union.”
Tedros reported that there is already a shortage of vaccines in at least 21 countries due to circulation restrictions and warned that the number of preventable diseases could increase. “This does not have to happen, we are working with countries to help them.”
As more countries facilitate their containment, the WHO has recommended that this exit be gradual, controlled and slow. “The measures must be planned with a new social contract between citizens, with community participation and the strengthening of public health,” said Michael Ryan, director of the WHO emergency program.
