A nurse from the US state of California was diagnosed with COVID-19 more than a week after receiving the vaccine Pfizeran ABC News affiliate reported Tuesday, but a medical expert said the body needs more time to create protection.

Matthew W., a 45-year-old nurse who works at two local hospitals, wrote on Facebook on December 18 that he had received the Pfizer vaccine, telling the ABC News affiliate that his arm hurt for a day, but it had no other side effects.

Six days later, on Christmas Eve, he fell ill after being on call at a Covid-19 unit, the report added. He felt chills and then had muscle pain and fatigue.

He went to a hospital for rapid tests and received a positive result for Covid-19 the day after Christmas, according to the report.

Christian Ramers, an infectious disease specialist at the San Diego Family Health Center, told the ABC News affiliate that this situation is not surprising.

“We know from clinical trials of the vaccine that it will take between 10 and 14 days to start developing the protection of the vaccine,” Ramers explained.

“That first dose, we think it gives about 50%, and you need that second dose to get up to 95%,” he said.
