US President Donald Trump was hospitalized Friday afternoon. During the night, he and the first lady, Melania, tested positive for Covid.
After a day of great uncertainty about the president’s health, Donald Trump left the White House. He raised his thumb. He greeted reporters, but did not respond to questions, and went to the helicopter.
The president was taken to Walter Reed Military Hospital, 14 kilometers away. Shortly before, Trump recorded a short video and posted it on social media. He thanked the Americans for their support. He said he was fine and would go to the hospital to make sure everything went well. He also said that the first lady, Melania, is also doing very well.
In a statement, the White House said the president was in a good mood, had mild symptoms and worked throughout the day. And that, as a precaution and following the medical recommendation, Trump will work in the presidential office that is inside the hospital for the next few days. Melania is isolated in the White House.
Earlier, in a statement, the president’s doctor had reported that Trump was fatigued and had been treated at the White House with a cocktail of antibodies still in the testing phase. The first lady, Melania, had a cough and a headache. The US press, citing sources, already assured that the president had a fever since the morning.
Trump is at risk: he is 74 years old and obese. He and Melania underwent the test after one of the president’s closest aides, Hope Hicks, informed the White House that she was infected. He traveled with the president during the week, including for the debate, in Cleveland, on Tuesday (29).
When he reached the auditorium, the president and the first lady removed their masks. Trump’s sons and advisers weren’t wearing masks either.
A doctor even asked them to put it on, but no one saw it.
The candidates were more than two meters apart. The two had been examined by Covid the day before. When asked about wearing a mask, Trump pulled one out of his pocket and said sarcastically: “I’m not wearing a mask like him, he could be 60 meters from me and he would be wearing the largest mask I have ever seen.”
The president also defended holding rallies, in the midst of a pandemic, unlike his opponent, Joe Biden. Trump said he had gathered 40,000 people, with no ill effects.
The next day, Trump held a well-attended rally in Minnesota and threw hats at people.
On Thursday, the president traveled to meet with supporters in the state of New Jersey. When boarding, he was not wearing a mask. Neither are those close to him.
The White House admitted that, at the time, Trump already knew that Aide Hope Hicks had tested positive.
The spokeswoman said the team considered it safe for the president to participate in the events. 32 days before the election, Donald Trump had rallies scheduled for Friday, Florida, Saturday (3), Wisconsin and Monday (5), Arizona. Even before the hospitalization, the campaign had reported that all of the president’s events would become virtual or postponed.
Vice President Mike Pence and his wife Karen tested negative and will continue the campaign agenda.
Democratic candidate Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, also tested negative. Biden said he did two tests this Friday. He went to Michigan. He gave a speech, but canceled another campaign event he would have at the end of the day. He wished for a speedy and full recovery for the president and first lady, saying that Trump’s diagnosis is a warning that the pandemic must be taken seriously.
