Trawler in Cracolândia: Father Julio Lancelotti links the action of the Municipal Guard to the start of a riot

Father Julio Lancelotti, from Pastoral Povo da Rua, says that the trawler registered in Cracolândia happened after civil guards prevented drug users from staying under the Julio Prestes station canopy to protect themselves from the hail storm that hit the center from São Paulo. The report contradicts the official version that the confusion started because drug addicts attacked the GCM.

The most recent episode of conflict in Cracolândia occurred the day before yesterday. A group that was in the vicinity of the Princess Isabel Square looted at least six vehicles, invaded cars and looted drivers.

The riot lasted about 20 minutes until it was controlled by the Military Police, which maintains a base in the area and also acted in the conflict, without anyone being arrested. In the region, traders also say they fear further attacks.

The trawler was filmed by witnesses. “What is disclosed is only part of the narrative,” says Father Julio Lancelotti, who works to take in homeless people, including people from Cracolândia. “When the rain started, many looked for protection in the Júlio Prestes canopy, but GCM attacked so that they would not enter.”

On social media, he posted a video that would reinforce the version, but does not capture the alleged GCM attack. The images show civil guards protecting the Station, which is close to the “flow” where drug users are concentrated. In the background, it is possible to hear the sound of a bomb.

For him, the episode does not justify the attack on the drivers, but must be considered in the search for solutions. “Violent treatment generates a violent response. We need to understand why we have reached such a dramatic point, ”he says. “It is noteworthy that the Military Police were 100 meters from the location of the trawler. People were attacked and a crime was being committed. Why didn’t he intervene?

The prime minister’s executive secretary, Colonel Álvaro Batista Camilo, maintains that the action was “quick”, although the police could not catch the criminals in the act. An investigation was launched yesterday to identify the perpetrators, according to the Ministry of Public Security (SSP).

“The police are already capillarized and, when called, they quickly put order. Between the start of the action and the restoration of everything, it was about 20 minutes, ”he says. “The trawler was not targeting people and no one was injured. They wanted the goods, mainly cell phones, to be exchanged for drugs. “

According to him, the police and direct patrols were also reinforced after the case. The portfolio data also shows more than 1,270 arrests in Cracolândia in the last two years, in addition to the seizure of 3.6 tons of drugs and 15 firearms.

“The Nova Luz problem is complex. If it were simple, it was already solved ”, says Camilo. “It is not just a police problem, a joint effort is needed from the Social Assistance and Health area in the treatment and reception of these people.”

In a note, the Department of Urban Security, responsible for GCM, says that the “flow” had been transferred from Rua Dino Bueno to Alameda Cleveland, to remove demolition materials in a block in the region. “The action was previously informed and agreed,” he says.

The folder questions the version of the priest. “GCM started the operation, which was normal, however, a group of regulars began to throw stones, sticks and other objects in the direction of public agents. It is necessary to contain the unjust aggression to preserve the security of all in the region ”. Also according to the file, GCM “reinforced fixed surveillance” and “intensified patrols.”

Fear

The merchants in the area are torn between fear and resignation. “The feeling is horrible, we live insecure,” says a trader, who did not want to be identified. “There needs to be an alarm and an iron bar on the door because that’s where I get my livelihood.”

Working near the trawler site, Leonardo da Silva, 47, says he is “well used.” “You can’t make it easy because they take it.”
