Six people developed a severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine made by Pfizer and BioNTech, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said Saturday.
The agency said it is investigating the cause of the allergic reactions and what links the six cases may have. Some of the people are from Alaska, but others are from elsewhere, said Tom Clark, a CDC official who presented data to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, or ACIP, whose members met today to vote on another vaccine made by Modern
The affected people are all adults under 65, and most were hospitalized, treated immediately, and subjected to observation, Clark said. The photos they received were of more than one production line, he added, suggesting that the reactions were not the result of a localized manufacturing problem. The CDC learned of all the cases quickly through federal vaccine safety monitoring systems, Clark.
Of the 112,807 vaccinated people registered in the health surveillance security system as of Friday, 3,150 reported post-vaccination symptoms that made it impossible for them to carry out daily or work activities. Most do not require medical attention, Clark said, adding that the CDC is studying the reports for more details.
The ACIP endorsed the use of the Moderna vaccine in people 18 years of age and older on Saturday, and panelists said the benefits of inoculation outweigh the risks, considering thousands of deaths occur daily in the US.
UK opened an investigation: UK regulators said last week that people with a “significant history” of allergic reactions should not receive the covid-19 vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech. The recommendation is expected to last while local authorities investigate two cases of allergic reaction that occurred on the first day of mass vaccination in the country. The alert could prompt US and European officials to restrict vaccination to people with a severe type of allergic reaction. (Dow Jones Newswires).
