SÃO PAULO – Doctors and scientists who have dealt with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic in São Paulo criticized the São Paulo government’s response to the worsening of the pandemic scenario. In the expert assessment heard by GLOBO, the descent of 100% of the municipalities to the yellow phase of the economic recovery plan, on Monday, was late and timid. They also criticized the date of the decision, a day after the result of the second round of municipal elections.

For the infectologist and director of the Sociedade Pauista de Infectologia (SPI), Evaldo Stanislau de Araújo, more aggressive measures are needed to have a real impact on the transmission of the coronavirus in São Paulo, which has accelerated since the end of October.

– The way in which it is being done, right after an electoral campaign, which had the most was the crowds, is, at least, hypocritical. If there is no way to monitor and ban crowds, then we must close all essential establishments at peak times. As it was done, he is late and shy – evaluates Araújo.

Analytical: Tighter quarantine in São Paulo creates embarrassment for Doria

On Monday, Governor João Doria announced that the entire state of São Paulo is once again in the yellow phase of quarantine, the same level reached on September 11. On October 9, 76% of the state improved its indicators and went into the green phase. This included the Greater São Paulo, Baixada Santista, Taubaté, Sorocaba, Piracicaba and Campinas regions.

Now, again in the yellow phase, it means that establishments must operate at 40% of their capacity, no longer at 60% as in the green phase, and have more rigid schedules. Bars, restaurants, beauty salons and gyms can be open until 10:00 pm, with 10 hours of operation per day.

Face-to-face activities in schools will not be interrupted and will be available to 20% of students, according to state government guidelines, as has already been done.

Despite the setback, explains intensive care doctor Ederlon Rezende, from a practical point of view, the measures should not change the Covid figures in the state.

– If I had to choose between time (hardening) and intensity, I would criticize the intensity. What disappointed me the most is that I expected more hardening. If there’s one thing we could do, it’s restrict bars and shows, for example. These kinds of things can be postponed for later, always on the condition that there is an economic impact on it, but decisions need to be made.

COVID-19: The drop in antibodies also puts those who have become ill with the new coronavirus at risk

According to Rezende, the scenario should worsen in the coming days with the Christmas shopping trips and January deadlines.

– The non-optimistic analysis is that our big problem will occur in mid-December, with all the impacts of commercial and street movements. We also already have a large part of the population scheduled to travel. It will be another blow – he says.

For epidemiologist Paulo Lotufo, the pandemic has already shown signs of worsening since October, a time when isolation measures could have been re-evaluated, avoiding a worsening of the hospitalization situation, both in public and private networks. Today, the ICU occupancy rate for Covid is 59.1% in Greater SP and 52.2% in the state.

– Arrived late (quarantine tightened). We had evidence since the end of October that the data was increasing, we already know what the indicators are. Surely a measure could have been taken earlier – emphasizes the epidemiologist.
