The secretary of Mobility and Transport of the city of São Paulo, Edson Caram, said today that the reduction in the volume of vehicles circulating due to the implementation of the new rotation is not yet what the authorities expect. The measure aims to increase the rate of social isolation amidst the fight against the coronavirus.
“At first, it can be seen that there is a decrease in the volume of cars circulating in the city of São Paulo. It is not yet expected, the population is still moving beyond what we want,” he said in an interview with Bom Dia São Paulo, from TV Globo.
Under the new rules, vehicles will be able to travel through the country’s largest city every other day, according to the end of their license plate. Odd numbers can only circulate on odd days and even numbers only on even days.
The traffic restriction will be valid every day, including weekends and holidays. In addition, it will last 24 hours a day.
Due to the wider rotation, the city increased the number of vehicles on public transportation by 1,000 buses. According to Caram, in addition to this amount, another 460 buses that were in the pockets entered circulation this morning.
The secretary said that the idea of the restriction is not that people migrate to public transport, but that they remain in their homes, at a time when the health system is under pressure due to the large number of cases of covid-19.
“These circulating people must be at home according to the mayor’s decree. Today we should only have people on the street who really work in essential services. The quarantine is still maintained, the hospital beds are reaching their limit and the curve is growing … The message the city wanted to send was: stay home and save lives, “he added.
Increased demand for public transport.
The Secretary of Metropolitan Transport of the State of São Paulo, Alexandre Baldy, who also participated in the interview, said that the fleet increased and that, at peak times, there was an increase in demand for the metro and CPTM.
“The state government will work on all their needs, whatever is necessary to contribute, so that we can transport people with quality and, at this time of the pandemic, safely, avoiding overcrowding, the number of trains increased. “, he said.
“If the system needs a bigger increase, we will,” he said.
