The Civil Police closed a luxury casino in the South Zone of São Paulo in the early hours of Sunday (14). Gambling is prohibited in the country.

According to Brazilian law, games of chance are those that depend exclusively on the luck of the participants.

In addition to being illegal, the establishment, which operated in Vila Olímpia, a noble neighborhood in the São Paulo capital, did not respect the state decree that vetoes parties and agglomerations during the pandemic.

On the same date, the country registered a new record for deaths and hospitalizations from coronavirus. The state of São Paulo is in the red quarantine phase since March 6, the most restrictive, to try to contain the spread of the disease and prevent the collapse of the health system.

More than 200 people were playing. At the time of the operation, the player Gabigol, Flamengo striker and funker MC Gui were captured within the establishment.

Police said the player was found hiding under a casino table.

All the people were referred to the Commissariat for Crimes against Public Health in downtown São Paulo.

They signed a detailed term, agreeing to clarify later, and were released.

The complainants informed the police that the site had been operating for some time and that more than 8 million had been spent on luxury facilities.

Many of those in the casino were not wearing masks or were dressing incorrectly.

The state of São Paulo faces a new peak in the Covid-19 pandemic, with an increase in the number of cases and deaths.

To try to stop the spread of the disease, the state government announced the emergency phase, which provides stricter rules for the operation of the red quarantine phase, starting next Monday (15). The emergency phase should last until March 30.

As a result, services, masses, and other collective religious activities, in addition to all sporting events, such as soccer games, were suspended, and a curfew was instituted from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.

Even with the restrictions, the police have disrupted events with crowds. In the early hours of Saturday (13), 500 people attended a clandestine party in the Capão Redondo region, also in the South Zone.

On Wednesday (10), 158 people were arrested at an illegal party on the banks of the Billings dam, in São Bernardo do Campo, in the ABC region.

On Friday (12), the police stopped a ballad with about 150 people in Tatuapé, in the East Zone.
