A report prepared in April 2019 by a team of engineers, at the request of the Ministry of Health, found several problems in the fire extinguishing structure of the Federal Hospital of Bonsucesso (HFB), in the north of Rio. A year and a half later, nothing was done and this Tuesday the 27th, the hospital caught fire, killing at least three patients.

Asked on Tuesday about the lack of measures to remedy the risk of fire in the hospital, the Ministry of Health did not comment, limited itself to lamenting the fire and the death of a patient, in a note. In September 2019, in possession of this report, the Office of the Federal Public Defender tasked HFB management with bringing the hospital into line with safety standards and requested the Fire Department to inspect the health unit.

“After that, the Ombudsman repeatedly reinforced the need for urgent action to the competent bodies,” the Ombudsman said in a statement. “As for the reasons why the demands were not met, we have no way of answering. We suggest that the questions be sent to those responsible for managing the HFB “
