As of today (1st), the minimum wage is worth R $ 1,100, according to Provisional Measure No. 1,021, published in the Official Gazette of the Federation, on the 30th. Last year, the minimum wage was R $ 1,045 .

The readjustment in relation to 2020 was 5.26%. The National Consumer Price Index (INPC) from January to November and the estimated variation of the financial market for the index in December 2020 were taken into account.

According to the Ministry of Economy, on the 12th of this month, when the INPC comes out in December, the new amount of the minimum wage may be corrected to ensure the preservation of the purchasing power defined by the Constitution. This happened at the end of 2019. On December 31, 2019, it was announced that the 2020 minimum wage would be R $ 1,039. In January, when the INPC for December was published, which was above the initial projection, the value was adjusted to R $ 1,045.

This is the third definition of value for the minimum wage in 2021. On December 15, the government increased the estimate of the minimum wage from R $ 1,067 to R $ 1,088. The amount was a message of modification of the draft Law of Budgetary Guidelines (LDO).

There was an additional R $ 21 in relation to the projection of R $ 1,067 contained in the proposal for the General Budget of the Union, sent to Congress at the end of August 2020.

Increased expenses

According to the Ministry of Economy, for each increase of R $ 1 in the minimum wage, there is an increase in expenses of R $ 351.1 million. Thus, the increase of R $ 12, from R $ 1,088 to R $ 1,100, generates additional expenses of approximately R $ 4 billion in 2021.

The economic team pointed out, last Wednesday (30), that the correction of the amount of the minimum wage is a constitutional obligation and that it does not affect the government’s commitment to the spending ceiling and the fiscal adjustment.

Despite coming into effect on Friday, the new value must be confirmed by the National Congress since the government made the adjustment through a provisional measure.
