A study by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) indicated that the green water of the Barra da Tijuca lagoons, in the West Zone of Rio, is toxic, so part of the shore must be closed for the bathroom.

THE RJ1 showed on Tuesday (20) that the neighborhood lagoon complex was dyed green by microalgae that proliferate in sewage and heat.

The biologist Mario Moscatelli sent a water sample to the Laboratory for the Promotion and Evaluation of Environmental Health of Fiocruz. The report noted that the cyanobacteria that multiplied this week release harmful toxins to bathers.

“What was episodic is becoming systematic. It is essential that people are informed, because it is very serious, “said the biologist.

“This toxin can cause everything from skin problems to gastrointestinal complications in the liver,” Moscatelli said.

At low tide, all this amount of toxins goes to Quebra-Mar and Barra da Tijuca Beach – more on the Pepê section.

The phenomenon is more common in summer, when the heat accelerates the multiplication of cyanobacteria, but this year the greenish water has already appeared in early spring.

THE RJ1 he navigated the canals and found a strong smell of sewage, as well as tires, wood, and furniture floating in the water mirror.
