The Minister of Health, Nelson Teich, announced today at a press conference that the federal government will send the National Force of the SUS (Unified Health System) to Manaus to strengthen the health system of the capital of Amazonas, one of the most overburdened of the country on behalf of the new coronavirus.

Previously, the city’s mayor, Arthur Virgilio Neto (PSDB-AM), had previously warned that “the worst is yet to come” in the state, representing 2,888 confirmed cases of covid-19 and 234 deaths. There, the disease has a case fatality of 8.1%, higher than the national average of 6.7%.

In the Amazon government’s technical analyzes, the peak of the disease will occur on May 15. Still, according to the mayor, there is “not the slightest condition to fully open economic activity,” because more people will get sick and the hospitals are already full.

The statements were made in a video conference in the external commission of the Chamber of Deputies to combat the coronavirus. Governor Wilson Lima (PSC-AM), state deputies and members of the Regional Medical Council also participated.

Teich also reported that the government has already received 10 million additional tests for covid-19 that have not yet been distributed to the states. According to the minister, the person in charge of this logistics is General Luiz Eduardo Ramos, of the Government Secretariat.

In addition, the government today rated more than 1,134 ICU beds (Intensive Care Unit) throughout Brazil, “in the most different states.” Teich did not specify where these beds will be installed, but said that an investment of R $ 163 million will be needed during the next 90 days for their maintenance and operation.

After the press conference, the Ministry of Health personnel published a list with the division of these ICU beds. In total, nine states were considered: Acre, Alagoas, Ceará, Maranhão, Pará, Pernambuco, Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte and São Paulo. On the brink of collapse, the Amazon did not gain new beds.

Isolation output

When asked about social isolation, the oncologist avoided endorsing or criticizing him, saying only that “he defends what is best for society.”

“It does not mean that we are leaving tomorrow, or that someone defends isolation or not. If the best thing for society is isolation and if it has to be, it will be. If I can relax and if that does not influence the fight against disease, that’s what I’m going to do, “he said.

He also stated that there is no “option of isolation or not.” “It is isolation at the right time and departure at the right time. This ability to judge and make decisions is what will make us help society,” he concluded.
