The Goiânia Emergency Hospital (Hugo) has 70 licensed health professionals due to suspected contamination by the new coronavirus (Covid-19), with flu symptoms. This number of cases is already resulting in a labor shortage in the unit. The situation was verified by entities in the Health area last Thursday morning (30), who found insufficient nursing technicians.
In addition to the 70 patients with symptoms, there are professionals in the unit who were withdrawn due to having contact with Covid-19 positive patients and waiting the period in isolation to perform the examination. The hospital has already hired 19 new professionals to carry out the replacements and plans to reach up to 50 substitutes next Monday (3). Hugo has already conducted 61 tests on his team, and three had a positive result.
Goiás State Health Council member Luzinéia Vieira says she trapped the wards with more than 100 patients seen by just four nursing technicians on Thursday morning. She reports that in this situation, nursing technicians cannot verify medication administration at the correct time. Therefore, they deliver the medications to patients responsible for using them on their own.
“It is humanly impossible to work with that number of professionals. Management reported that they are hiring, but these professionals did not arrive, “says the counselor. Luzinéia and representatives of the Union of Workers of the Unified Health System in the State of Goiás (Sindsaúde-GO) should return for a new visit next week, when they will verify if the new hires have been carried out.
Flaviana reinforces that the decrease in employees is notable. According to the unionist, in places where there were about 50 workers on previous visits, there were around 20 on Thursday morning. Both Sindsaúde and the Council advocate for increased testing among health professionals in the state. “As the virus circulates throughout Hugo’s floors, he should have tried it all. If not, they will have to keep too many people away, ”defends Flaviana.
Sindsaúde-GO has sought information on the total number of infected professionals who have been examined, but so far there has been no response from the Goiás State Health Department (SES-GO), the Goiânia Municipal Health Department (SMS) and social organizations (OS) that manage public hospitals.
Currently, rapid tests from the Ministry of Health (MS) are being used only in health and safety professionals, and their families, with symptoms for more than seven days. In Hugo, professionals who do not have symptoms are also fired, but who had contact with positive patients. Depending on the type of contact, which is evaluated within a protocol, this worker is also isolated at home.
The report found that the number of casualties in state hospitals, especially Hugo, has worried SES-GO members. There is an internal discussion to evaluate the health professionals of the hospitals considered essential in the fight against Covid-19. According to the secretary of state, a survey is being prepared for continuous monitoring by health professionals.
Eight servers are at home waiting for the time to perform the test, which is from the eighth day after the onset of symptoms. Six who were on leave returned to work Thursday. The SES-GO briefing note sent for the report does not specify whether the three positive test cases are among the 70 sheets.
The cases of expulsion of health professionals for suspicion or confirmation of coronavirus are not exclusive to Hugo. Among the state hospitals, there were also confirmed cases in the Anápolis State Emergency Hospital Dr. Henrique Santillo (Huana), in Maternidade Dona Iris, in the State Hospital for Tropical Diseases Dr. Anuar Auad (HDT), in the central administration of SES-GO and other units.
The Secretary of State for Health, Ismael Alexandrino, said that the cases of Covid-19 in hospitals and health professionals are worrying, but they were already expected. “At Hugo, we must disinfect the floors, and where necessary. The PPE stock is guaranteed, but hygiene measures and individual and collective protection must always be reinforced. Every life matters, but that of health professionals at this critical moment, there is little attention. ”
Drama of the health worker
Health professional interviewed by POPULAR for the article “Health professionals in Goiás report difficulties in treating the coronavirus and fear of contamination”, published on the 17th of this month, the nursing technician Maura Inês dos Santos, from 54 years old, found out on Monday just (27), that he was contaminated. “It is a blow. It generates great fear and anxiety. I am afraid of sleeping and aggravating my condition, ”he says, who works at the Goiânia Emergency Hospital (Hugo) and at the Extravagant Emergency Care Unit (UPA), in Aparecida de Goiânia. Maura took the test after her boss at UPA also tested positive for Covid-19.
Maura Inês is quarantined at her residence. The 62-year-old husband, with chronic kidney disease and diabetes, went to his mother’s home. He, the pair of children and son-in-law have already undergone the coronavirus test and await results. When he spoke to the newspaper in the middle of the month, the nursing technician said he had a double celebration every day: when he got to work and saw his colleagues well, and when he returned home, when he found healthy family members. But now, fear haunts her. “Not only for me, but for being a transmitter of an unknown and complicated virus.”
Before, the fear of the nursing technician was to get infected in the UPA, since it is an open door unit. Certain that she is a carrier of the virus, she believes the contamination occurred within Hugo. “In my neighborhood, on the second floor, there are five or six cases of Covid-19. I transported the patient from one side to the other ”.
Tests
SES informed POPULAR that it follows the guidelines defined in the technical notes of the Ministry of Health to carry out rapid tests in symptomatic people. Defined categories include health professionals. “SES-GO sent the flows to request the tests to state health units, 18 regional health offices and municipal health departments so that, according to the recommendations, the professionals are evaluated,” the agency said in a note.
SMS explained that it is not enough that the server wants to do the test. “It is necessary to have the indication of a doctor, following the protocols of the MS and the World Health Organization (WHO).”
In Goiânia, this week’s portfolio started the survey with rapid tests among health professionals.
The National Institute of Technology and Health (INTS), which administers Hugo, denies that there are patients infected with the new coronavirus in the health unit. According to his press office, “There are patients who are hospitalized for trauma and without any suspicion of flu-like syndrome that could lead to suspicion of Covid-19 contamination,” it says in a note. Since many of the professionals work at two locations, INTS reported that those who suspected contamination were placed in isolation at home and the administration would have determined the rapid test.
