The number of confirmed deaths of Covid-19 in the state of São Paulo reached 2,375, 6% more than that registered on Wednesday, 2,247
Regarding cases, the increase was 10% in the period. Until this Thursday, São Paulo confirmed 28,698 cases (26,158 until the previous day).
Among the fatalities are 1,390 men and 985 women. Deaths remain concentrated in patients 60 years of age or older (73.2%).
The capital of São Paulo has 18,438 cases of the disease and 1,514 deaths. Confirmed cases increased by 15.8% between April 29-30.
The ICU bed occupancy rate in the state is 69.3%, with 1,744 hospitalized. Another 2,138 remain in rooms. In São Paulo, hospitals are approaching full capacity, with 89% of ICU beds occupied.
With the situation close to collapse, starting this weekend, the State Department of Health will begin using inpatient beds for inpatients in Greater São Paulo. The measure will be valid for a few days, according to the Secretary of State for Health, José Henrique Germann.
The distribution of available beds will be carried out through the Cross system (Central Regulation for the provision of health services), depending on the availability of vacancies and the patient’s clinical condition.
Despite seeing a flattening of the curve, the state is at the beginning of the upward phase of the pandemic, according to Dimas Tadeu Covas, director of the Butantan Institute.
The rate of social isolation this Thursday was 47% in the state and 48% in the capital of São Paulo.
SP Governor João Doria, Deputy Governor Rodrigo García, and members of the Coronavirus Contingency Center met Thursday with the Minister of Health, Nelson Teich.
According to the infectologist David Uip, who coordinates the center, the minister indicated his lines of action, such as maintaining the social isolation program. The portfolio expressed concern about the difficulty of buying supplies, the testing program and the appearance of new waves of infected people in the country.
Teich was also concerned about the speed of the procedures, because São Paulo is on an upward curve with new patients and deaths and needs devices and supplies.
The State Department of Health asked Teich for 1,600 car monitor kits, $ 20 million in PCR collection supplies (such as test tubes), PPE for ICU beds ($ 4.2 million in scrubs and N95 surgical masks), 2.6 millions of emergency medications such as oseltamivir and chloroquine for the ministry’s own protocols and 4 million rapid tests for the population.
The Ministry of Health had already sent 400,000 tests, aimed at health professionals.
The minister also asked the minister for one hundred respirators, which will be sent to the USP Hospital das Clinicas in the next 15 days. The HC assigned the Central Institute to attend to the cases of Covid-19. In addition to the 200 ICU beds, another 100 are being opened and another 100 are due to open, for a total of 400.
Another request was the accreditation of 2,783 specific UCI courses for Covid-19. To date, 734 have been enabled.
On Thursday, President Jair Bolsonaro again criticized the governors who determined social isolation and said that the state of São Paulo inflates the Covid-19 numbers for political use.
In a note read during a press conference, the Secretary of State for Health, José Henrique Germann, said that the president’s statement was irresponsible and that Jair Bolsonaro ignores the fact that social isolation in São Paulo is a determining factor in flattening the curve and, consequently, a decrease in the number of infected patients and patients who need an ICU, avoiding a collapse in the public health system.
