Teich took office on April 17. This is the second outing for a Minister of Health amid the coronavirus pandemic. Teich had replaced Luiz Henrique Mandetta.
Like Mandetta, Teich also did not agree with President Jair Bolsonaro on measures to combat the coronavirus.
In recent days, the President and Teich have had disagreements about:
- The use of chloroquine in the treatment of covid-19 (disease caused by the virus). Bolsonaro wants to change the SUS protocol and allow the drug to be applied from the beginning of the treatment.
- Bolsonaro’s decree that expanded essential activities during the pandemic period and included beauty salons, hair salons, and gyms.
- details of the plan with guidelines for the exit of the isolation. The President advocates for more immediate and broader flexibility.
Teich was called to a meeting at the Planalto Palace this morning. He was with Bolsonaro and then returned to the Ministry of Health building. The resignation was announced shortly after.
Disagreements with Bolsonaro
This week, Bolsonaro said in an interview when leaving the Palácio do Alvorada official residence that his ministers should be “in tune with him.” The president referred to a Teich post on social media, in which the then minister warned of the risks of chloroquine in the treatment of covid-19.
Bolsonaro is a proponent of chloroquine, although there is no scientific evidence of the drug’s effectiveness in treating the disease.
“Look, all the ministers, I know what the question is, they have to be in tune with me. All the ministers are my political nominations and when I speak with the ministers, I want effectiveness in the end. In this case, I don’t like or dislike the Minister Teich, is what is happening, “said Bolsonaro at the time.
“An important caveat: Chloroquine is a medication with side effects. Therefore, any prescription must be made based on a medical evaluation. The patient must understand the risks and sign the ‘Consent Form’ before starting to use Chloroquine. ”
Bolsonaro also said he would speak to the minister about changing the SUS protocol to use chloroquine. Currently, SUS administers the remedy in severe cases. Bolsonaro wants the application from the beginning of the treatment.
The use of colloquine continues to be studied in several countries, but researchers have not yet been able to find conclusive results. The drug is commonly used to treat malaria.
Chloroquine was also one of the reasons for the disagreement that led to the resignation of former Health Minister Luiz Henrique Mandetta, replaced by Teich.
