São Paulo registered a weekly moving average of 91 deaths, the lowest figure since April 24, when it closed at 83 deaths. The state governor, João Doria (PSDB), today celebrated the results as a sign that the severity of the pandemic is decreasing. However, the Secretary of State for Health, Jean Gorinchteyn, warned that care must be maintained to avoid transmission to avoid a new wave of cases.
“The state has the lowest weekly moving average of deaths in the last six months. On Wednesday, it was less than 100 deaths. The state registered a drop in deaths of 23% compared to the last 15 days and 44% in compared to the last 30 days. “, Doria said during a press conference held at the Palácio dos Bandeirantes, in São Paulo.
The weekly moving average of deaths announced on Wednesday (28) is about a third of the maximum of the health crisis. On July 18, statistics showed that the weekly moving average of deaths was 277 deaths. According to the government, since September 16, weekly moving averages of deaths have been declining.
The numbers are favorable, but the governor reinforces the need to maintain attention.
“Good news that proves the success of the São Paulo Plan, but that requires attention and prevention on the part of the population,” added Doria.
Secretary Jean Gorinchteyn warned that São Paulo must face a long plateau, when the disease is stable and not necessarily low in the number of cases and deaths. “The second wave is possible,” he said. “It may be that the speed of the fall slows down. It may be that we are not in the second wave, but in a new lower plateau. That is the attention that everyone should have,” he explained.
The executive secretary of the Coronavirus Contingency Center, João Gabbardo, pointed out that European countries are already in the second wave. Use these cases as an example to maintain protective measures.
“We had a long period of [média móvel semanal de óbitos] from 250, we reduced it to 200 and today we are 91. It shows a constant and safe reduction and today we are below 100 daily cases. It is very relevant, but it does not serve to relax the measurements. We are seeing what happens in Europe. And the measures must be maintained and strengthened. “
Despite the drop in numbers, there are still 4,123 people hospitalized in the wards of state hospitals, undergoing treatment for Covid-19. Another 3,147 are in ICU.
