São Paulo state registered 679 new deaths caused by Covid-19 this Tuesday (16), the highest total in 24 hours since the beginning of the pandemic. The number equates to a new confirmed death every 2 minutes and 6 seconds. In total, the state reached 64,902 deaths caused by the coronavirus.

The previous record, set last week, was 521 deaths in one day and accounted for just over one death every 3 minutes.

The new records do not necessarily mean that the deaths occurred overnight, but that they were computed in the system during this period. Notifications are usually lower on weekends, holidays and Mondays, due to the delay in accounting.

The moving average of deaths, which considers the records of the last seven days, was also a record this Tuesday (16) and reached 400 daily deaths. The value is 50% higher than that registered 14 days ago, which for experts indicates strong upward trend of the epidemic.

As the calculation of the moving average takes into account a longer period than the daily record, it is possible to measure the pandemic trend more reliably.

The state also had 17,684 new cases of the disease confirmed in the last 24 hours. In total, São Paulo reached 2,225,926 confirmed cases of Covid-19 since the beginning of the epidemic.

The moving average of cases was a record this Monday, reaching 13,129 cases per day, a figure 39% higher than that verified 14 days ago, which also indicates an upward trend.

In a post on social media, the executive secretary of the São Paulo government’s Coronavirus Contingency Center, João Gabbardo, commented on the explosion of registered cases in the country and asked the new Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, not to oppose stricter measures of social isolation.

Earlier, in an interview with GloboNews, the deputy governor of the state, Rodrigo García, said that João Doria I do not rule out decreeing a confinement, but affirmed that the government cannot determine the closure of the state without this measure being coordinated at the national level.

Survey conducted by G1 and to TV Globo notes that at least 75 people with Covid or suspected illness died on the ICU bed waiting list not been.

The collapse of health also affects the private network of the capital of São Paulo. This Tuesday, the municipal secretary of Health, Edson Aparecido, said that private hospitals are requesting beds from SUS because they cannot meet the demand. “Something unprecedented,” Aparecido said.

The state has 69 municipalities with 100% occupancy of the beds of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for Covid-19, as announced on Monday (15) by the State Secretary of Health, Jean Gorinchteyn.

The total corresponds to little more 10% of São Paulo cities, since the state has 645 municipalities. Not all cities have ICU beds because, in smaller municipalities, the most serious patients are referred to regional referral hospitals.

The total number of patients hospitalized in the ICU on Monday (15) was 60% higher than the peak of the first wave of the pandemic in 2020. On Sunday, 24,285 people were registered, 10,507 in the ICU and 13,778 in the ward. The total number of inpatients in the state, including ICU and ward beds, has broken records every day since February 27.

The average ICU occupancy rate in São Paulo, including public and private beds, reached 89% this Monday (15).

Experts warn of the possibility of a collapse of the system, since the capacity to create beds, especially the ICU, is limited.

This Sunday, the municipal secretary of Health of São Paulo, Edson Aparecido, said that next week will be the most difficult of the entire pandemic in the city and admitted the risk of collapse of the health system.

“What we have to face this week is going to be the most difficult moment of this pandemic in the last 14 months,” the secretary warned.

A mathematical calculation shows that São Paulo may collapse its health system in the first days of April, if the current rate of advance of the pandemic remains the same.

All ICU beds available for Covid-19 in the state’s public and private networks should end in that period, if the current rate of hospitalizations for the disease and the opening of new beds continues to grow.

One death every five minutes

The state of São Paulo registered a new death from Covid-19 every five minutes in the first two weeks of March. In the first 14 days of March alone, there were 4,630 deaths from the disease, from eight to more than the total for December.

In these two weeks, 161,355 new cases have also been confirmed, which represents 40 confirmations every five minutes.
